So, "huckleberry" is another word for "blueberry"...?

No, they are separate species. The names are commonly interchanged though.

Our Red Huckleberry is preferable to our local wild blueberries. Better texture, taste, and no worms! We make jams, add them to salads, and they make wonderful pies and crisps.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

Yes, they are all members of the genus Vaccinium. Even domesticated blueberries were just wild species of Vaccinium 125 years ago. Common names abound for wild members of the genus. In Oregon we have over eight species of wild Vaccinium that are called huckleberries. My favorite is V. membranaceum, the mountain huckleberry pictured in beartooth's photo.

Other common names include 'whortleberry', 'bilberry', etc etc.

S.E. Idaho mountain purple huckleberries are excellent. There seems to be 2 sub-varieties of them. Red huckleberries growing in same places are watery and taste about like crap.
