Our Bear season opened today and the group my brother was hunting with got 2. The one had an ear tag I have never seen before. Can't wait to hear why. The only thing I can think of is it was tranquilized.

Wow. Never heard of that before. Keeps us apprised of the response. Nothing for me. Went solo along a new clearcut. Left after the second group showed up to drive it. Joke was on them. Sat on river flats in evening and only saw 4 fawns and a flock of turkeys. Be back at it solo again tomorrow.

A few years ago had a hunter shoot a USDA tagged bear. Had a tag # & phone #. Told him to call and see what they would tell him about the bear. All they would tell him is " that bear is safe to eat. All I could think is Why wouldn't it be? What are them jackwagons doing out there. Doesn't seem right to buy a license , harvest a bear and not be able to eat it. I'll be interested in what they tell you, or not.

Congrats on the bears!

From what I've been told by wardens and a PA biologist bears handled for the first time, either in hibernation or captured nuisance bears, get tagged. Some that are over 100 pounds get radio collars.

I've also been told that they won't tranquilize bears within thirty days of the season opener.

I'm looking forward to seeing what information you get from the PGC.

Eh...wot?

The Bear was Tranquilized in 2018. The Game Comm told him you can not eat one for 6 months after it was done. His is good to eat.

Good info. I always thought that you could eat them thirty days after being tranquilized and that's why they wouldn't do it within thirty days of the season.

Eh...wot?

Lug, they generally won't. I would imagine it became a nuisance within that 30 day period and had to be moved. When I worked the bear check station we had paper tags to give to guys for just such instances. I never handed one out.

Went back out solo this morning. Had a great time in the sleet/snow. Was able to move silently. Had more fun pretend deer hunting but great time in the woods. Quit rain/snowing around 10:00 and then animals really started moving. No bears though. Oh well, at least tried, unlike most years.

I was going to say tranquilized.
3 years ago I had a Bear in #3 Bridger. Game Warden said to meet him at so & so's. He and a State Trooper showed.
It was Bear archery season and GW ask State Trooper to taser Bear. Told me meat would be unfit to eat after tranquilizing.
They both followed me to Bear.
Trooper taser Bear, Warden opened trap jaws and released foot then backed off. Trooper stopped taser. Bear went the other way. Couldn't have scripted it better. Neat to watch too, was first time either have done that with a Bear.
