It comes oiled unless you're getting galvanized wire. I'll toss the roll on a dye pot and boil it.

I never have done anything to my support wires, I buy bulk #9 and weld on a spike to bottom to drive into frozen ground right outta the box. My coyotes here have seen and smelled every type of wire with millions of miles of fence lines, and do not shy away from a new piece at all. But in other areas may be different.

I throw a few rolls in my dye and also in the wax with traps and snares.Its not a scent issue so much as I dont want it rusting while in use or storage.I use a lot of tie wire but once it rusts its unreliable and needs to be re-inforced with new.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

I buy the small rolls and degrease them in a coffee can of mineral spirits or gasoline, then let it air out. BUT it's mostly because I hate it being greasy. I have no idea about odor.
Boco couldn't catch a cold. But if he did, it would be Top Lot.

I just put my roll of #9wire out on the wood pile for a couple of months lite rust just wipe with clean rag and good to go.
