It comes oiled unless you're getting galvanized wire. I'll toss the roll on a dye pot and boil it.

I do just because I don't want to get grease on all my other equipment. I just put it in a bucket with dawn dish soap and let it soak oven night. Then rinse and let dry.

As far as K-9's smelling it, possibly. But out in the elements it will fade quickly. A lot of guys just hang their snares with out degreasing and don't have any problems. So hang a few that are degreased and a few that aren't and you'll decide for yourself if it makes much difference.

I never have done anything to my support wires, I buy bulk #9 and weld on a spike to bottom to drive into frozen ground right outta the box. My coyotes here have seen and smelled every type of wire with millions of miles of fence lines, and do not shy away from a new piece at all. But in other areas may be different.

I throw a few rolls in my dye and also in the wax with traps and snares. Its not a scent issue so much as
I dont want it rusting while in use or storage.I use a lot of tie wire but once it rusts its unreliable and needs to be re-inforced with new.

I do and then let it rust up a bit, I use #9 and make supports I can reuse.

I buy the small rolls and degrease them in a coffee can of mineral spirits or gasoline, then let it air out. BUT it's mostly because I hate it being greasy. I have no idea about odor.

Boil it in secret recipe, rub it down with cedar boughs, wax it, store it in a sealed container with earth from the location where it's going to be set for 6 months, remove it and hang it behind the shed for an additional six months before use. Oh, and always wear rubber gloves to handle.
