Most dont go any further than they need to in order to feed their selves. 90% of my cat sets that hit, will hit within 3-4 days.

Agree with Danny from my experience in woods ... big toms come late Jan Feb are the exception

Yup, yup, and yup. The guys ahead of me know their cats. There is some wisdom to waiting until they prime up or better yet the big toms start getting into the mood b4 you set the first trap. I am seldom that patient but it would still be a good idea.

In my area they have very large ranges. I’m no big time cat trapper but I talked to a guy today that told me it’s not unusual for a Tom to take two weeks to make his loop. In this area a predator has to cover a lot of country to keep its belly full.

In my area they are on a longer cycle unless I am feeding them. My 10 day season starts on Dec 10th. I have managed to fill my one tag the past 3 years. I know of several areas they travel and have feed cubbies in select areas. I use the same cubbies from year to year. When I am not feeding I get pictures about every 2 weeks. When I am feeding I can keep a cat in an area or at least close and get pictures every couple days. My area is thousands of acres of everything from swamp to small growth to big woods and all state land. Our season just opened to state land 3 years ago so I am new to trapping them on purpose. I know a few trappers around here that are making the sets way to complicated and they don't fill those tag. I found a system that works for me and stick to it. I am no big time cat trapper but I have studied them in my area because they are just a neat creature. I have no choice of when to set traps with my 10 day season and one thing I learned is weather plays a huge roll in activity around here. My experience is they love the snow and move a lot on a fresh snowfall.
Wish I had more time to trap....

I would say 4 days up here. Even a fresh1/4, 1/2 inch skiff of snow will get them moving more. Here they start getting girly about mid December and more mobile. I have seen very small kittens in the beginning of December following their mother so the breeding can definitely happen any time. I’d be interested to hear what Trapperles or Friar have to say, they are not far from me and both good cat trappers. As a side note I had a fellow stop by yesterday here and gave me a list of people who are having cat troubles with their chickens. More than I’d heard in a long time. It seems the rabbits and hares of which we had plenty late last winter are all but gone. Hardly any tracks in the skiffs of snow we’ve now had. Whatever causes the crash seems to be in full swing.
