Properly installed and maintained 5 strand barb wire would keep 300lb calf in. Im curious what breed it is tho, 300 lbs isn't very big for a beefer

A 300 pound bull calf can cause a lot of problems. Speaking from experience. Seen the one that required a tranq gun run through an 8 foot gate, rip it off the hinges, wear it like a collar through a 4 strand slinky fenceand run off to the horizon.

Calves weaned on a trailer MUST be corralled for at least a week, or until they get used to their new home. They will find any weak spot in a fence, or make their own. They aren’t the first ones to learn this lesson the hard way. He’s plenty catchable with the right team of cowboys and dogs, if they’re around your area. The sale barn will know.

If they put another beef in a pen and feed and water in a separate pen hooked to it. He will end up going in. They are heard animals. They don't like being along. The other beef will act like a decoy. As far as the blue heeler goes, I have seen way more that had no clue then could do anything with cattle, other then run them out of the country. A trained blue heeler would help, but not every blue heeler is trained.

This. Even if you do catch him he is now feral. They will have a hard time keeping him fenced in.

Use the rifle eat some steaks.

A couple of horses and a good cow dog there should be no problem getting it roped. 300 pounds is just a little thing.

Short story, I was shooting pigeons on a farm with cow and had some long horns. The farmer wanted me to remove the pigeon in the enclosure. I did not want to go in with the long horns. He said just take blue and he will keep them in a corner. I went in the enclosure and here come the long horns, I just said, get them blue and he put all of the in the corner and kept them there until I left the enclosure.
Fun to watch.

On Georgian Bay, Ontario Canad...
We had a truck of cattle headed for the slaughterhouse overturn a few miles up the highway here. About 5 years ago now.

Middle of winter, northern Ontario bush, 50 cattle missing. Some half burned...most healthy.

After a week and a half or so they were wild, cagey as a whitetail.

I took off into the bush on snowmobile with the '06 and shot a bunch of them. Insurance guy paid me for the ear tags. Quartered them and skidded them out with some buddies. We had six quartered cows hanging at one point. lol.

They didn't mind letting us trappers keep them because legally we were using them for "wolf and coyote bait".

The average person wasn't allowed to go shoot them.

To avoid a hail of bullets the insurance guy was telling everyone that they had hormones in them that would make you sick.

Yea, we got sick alright. Sick cause we ate too much lol

I let 3 that couldn't be caught go to long due to family politics after my uncle died. I should have shot and ate them. Instead someone else got them.

We have been called many times over the years to catch cattle that have typically been chased by man and machine. They were usually wild as all get out by the time we would get the call . The worst was a group of 300 head that had just been bought to fatten and the hired man left the gate open. These cattle had come from southern Indiana off of pasture country and were a little on the wild side to start with . We had been warned as soon as we got there that they would charge a man on foot in a heartbeat. This was 1983 I think ( drought year ) everyone’s corn was toasted but the beans were still green and that’s where we found most of them in the beginning. We could typically only handle one at a time and the rest would scatter into the corn where we couldn’t see them unless they were right in front of you . That’s when we called in Mr. Richards and his catahoulas. I thought this whole thing was pretty western before with the local veterinarian flying his plane around like a stunt pilot trying to chase cattle out of the corn . Man these dogs brought a whole new perspective to the words cattle dogs ! We would see cattle disappear into the corn and we would unload the horses, Mr. Richards would whistle and point and those two dogs would strike and run that track like a couple of coon hounds. When they bayed up Mr. Richards would whistle and they would bring the steer right out in front of us. I think half the time those cattle would come to us looking for relief from the dogs.
