I’ve seen them try. When I guided mule deer hunters many years ago there were times we would find a herd buck with oh maybe between 5 and 10 does. Working up on them or just watching there movements another group or maybe a roaming buck would cause the herd buck to give chase and run him off. As soon as the big buck was busy any young bucks shadowing, and there always was, would immediately start mounting. Sometimes it was buttons. I’m not sure it could take, or if the button understands it all. It may just be instinct.

The one I shot this year was responding to a combination of doe bleats and grunt tube calls, so maybe?
