Id like to have one of those 1100s at that price I have the 20ga 1100(not sure what my dad payed in 1974), but I'd put $109.97 down for a 20ga M37!

Bruce, what year is that advertisement from? The first centerfire rifle/ carbine I purchased was a used 742 woodsmaster in .308 cal. ,it was a Canadian centennial 1967 commemorative model. I paid $150 for it in 1974, and was 16 years old at that time. Fast shooting rifle with pie plate ( 9" ) accuracy at 100yds. offhand, with open sights.

I came close... paid $165 for a 1100 w/ vent rib IC bbl. and 4 boxed high brass shells... also paid $119.95 for a Rem. 700 ADL .243 my second year of college... both from small local mom and pop gun shops. 1970 and 1973 respectively.

I have the receipt from the Savage 24 my mom bought my dad for their anniversary in 1964. $37.50. They don’t even make them pretty like that anymore for 20 times that amount. It is high polish blue and walnut, case hardened receiver. Great gun.

In 1968 I went to my local gun shop, ordered a new 16 Ga. Remington 870 Wingmaster the price I paid was $105.00. The next year I bought new 12 Ga. Remington Wingmaster Slug gun, the price was $112.00 I still own both of them.

I paid 240 for the 1100 in 1992
350 for the 742 in 93
the M37 127 went for a haircut and came home with a shotgun , but it has almost no original finish
yes wages matched , in 74 you could buy a new Plymouth satellite new for 3500 dollars with AC it was my moms first New car
what it does show us is why the Lever gun Ruled the woods 79 dollars bough a 7 pound rifle that was easy to carry plenty for deer , bear , and most anything else that needed shooting it held 6 or 7 rounds and you couldn't hardly wear them out if you took a little care of them.
hard for other guns to gain market when 79 would set you up well 60 dollars in ammo would have you hunting for a long time to even get to the sale price of other rifles

Back in the early 70's when I was in college the local gun store had a rack of used guns that always had a half dozen or so 94 winchesters for $100 each. I always looked, never had a $100.
Starbits I paid 84.00 for a brand new 94 in 1972

I still have the receipt for when my Father bought his Winchester Model 24 back in 1950. Paid $39.95 brand new. Now, that same shotgun is going for around $700 on Gunbroker. Sure wish I could find one like he had. Hit a note there bought mine in 12 gauge used for 150 bucks in 1975 clerk said a guy just walked out with a 20 for the same price
