With the shutdown here in France I've had plenty of time at the farm lately, so I decided to get a batch of calls started. We are moving to a different spot in the spring so my wood shop is going to get packed up before too long. It is great to work in my shop in the mid morning when I get this low angle light through the window. When you checker a gunstock nothing beats that type of natural light at a low angle because of the shadows you get as opposed to direct overhead light.

This batch was seven, and I hope to make another 4 or 5 before I start packing. These are all chestnut and French oak calls made from 50 year old fenceposts and ancient beams from the barn.

Thanks for looking.

Do turkeys in France have the same vocalization?

I mean other then the obvious: le yelp! le yelp! le yelp!

I bought one last year for a hunting buddy that collects calls, well made call and Pete was great to deal with looking to get another for me soon.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Unfortunately there are no wild turkeys here, and I greatly miss hunting them.

I have no idea how to post a sound file from my phone. I can make a recording or a video of them but after that I'm lost.

Yes, old air dried wood definitely makes a better sounding call. When I was in the states I really liked red cedar for the boxes and claro walnut for the bases and lids. I've used a lot of different woods over the years but chestnut has always been a favorite of veteran callmakers and I live in the middle of a chestnut forest. I have alot of 200 year old wood from some fallen beams in our stone barn, and lots of old chestnut fence posts that have been exposed to the elements for at least 50 years.

Pete
