Just heard general Chuck Yeager died

I was lucky enough to have meet him 20 some years ago and he struck me as a heck of a guy who left one heck of a legacy behind

General you will be missed if any man exemplified the expression “The Right Stuff”
It was you

Chuck Yeager, a former U.S. Air Force officer who became the first pilot to break the speed of sound, died Monday. He was 97.

In a brief statement on Twitter, his wife, Victoria, said he died just before 9 p.m. ET.

“An incredible life well lived, America’s greatest Pilot, & a legacy of strength, adventure, & patriotism will be remembered forever,” she said.

Oct. 14, 1947, Yeager became the first test pilot to break the sound barrier as he flew the experimental Bell XS-1 (later X-1) rocket plane over Muroc Dry Lake in California.

NASA has said that Yeager nicknamed the plane "Glamourous Glenis" after his wife.

He became familiar to a younger generation 36 years later when the actor Sam Shepard portrayed him in the movie, "The Right Stuff," based on the Tom Wolfe book. The book and movie centered on the daring test pilots of the space program's early days.

Great American. I spent a weekend around him at a fishing lodge in northern CA long ago. He said he was a meat fisherman and hunted the same way.

Years later I saw him in a bar in the Seattle airport with his new wife.

RIP.

Pete

A giant in American and aviation history. I met him twice, once as a boy, and again when I was a very junior military pilot. He had a swagger that he backed up with accomplishments. My favorite story about him is when he flew the X1 with cracked ribs and a chunk of broomstick. Our greatest generation. Fair skies Gen. Yeager!

A legend gone in body but not is spirit.

He was at Oshkosh speaking the year an F16 went off the end of runway 36. Something was mentioned while he had a microphone and he simply replied, "guard guys", with clearly a little sarcastic tone.

RIP
