My water is slightly acidic. Has a PH around 6.5 ish. I bought a tank about 8 years ago that you fill with calcite. Since it's just the wife and I, a tankful lasts a couple years. Calcite is nothing more than crushed marble. I found it locally today. 1 cubic foot or that equals 2- 50lb bags for $42 a bag. So, $84 total for marble sand. crazy That turns out to be one heck of a deal. The best I could find online was $59 a bag shipped. Most was $75 per bag and up, plus shipping! Keep in mind that this is crushed marble. What a racket!

No idea how your tank is set up but have you considered local limestone?

Limestone wouldnt last as long. Which may be a good or bad thing.

Limestone is a natural rock made up of the mineral calcite and some other substances. The proportion of calcite usually is between 50 and 75 % so on a weight basis it would indeed be used up at a faster rate which would not be a big deal if it was free.

How about oyster or clam shells? Only drawback is your water might have a slight bouillabaisse odor.

Would the cheap crushed marble that they sell for landscaping at garden stores work?

I bet crushed oyster shell would work, besides chickens, they use it in salt water aquariums to buffer the Ph
