Someone once asked me if I carry a pocket knife and why. So I answered "do deer die on the road?" Put that premise to the test again this morning when I picked up this nice road killed buck. Temperature outside was at 0 degrees this morning and the buck was in excellent condition just not breathing! Will turn this meat into hamburger and sausage. Chris

Does the state require you to get a tag for a road kill?
Here, if you don't actually hit it, but want it, you have to use your hunting tag on it. If you don't have that "unit" (mostly county based), you can't claim it. Would have to be a decent buck in good shape to burn my hunting tag on it...
P.S. If its wider than 22 inches, the state claims all road kill or found dead bucks or buck skulls. They sell those larger antler sets at their annual auction each spring. But none of this is in the annual hunting guide. A person typically "stumbles" into their "administrative rules" that act like laws. So screwed up...

Just have to go on-line and register the deer as a road kill. At that point, you receive a confirmation number that you retain until all the meat is consumed. In the past, you had to call the local law enforcement and they would come out to tag the deer and fill out paperwork. Took a lot of time for both parties. No deer license is required either! Chris

Nice-some of the best moosemeat I ever ate was from road kill and train kill. Got a whole moose in the freezer earlier that way.

Not sure what happened with that carcass but if I had hit it I sure would have wanted to keep it as moose meat is awesome. Chris

When I worked on the Temagami section we would get about 2 -3 moose per month. There is a big game preserve in that area and the trains ran in the wee hours of the night.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Not exactly sure what our laws are down here, maybe Warrior will chime in. If I want one I just get it. Seems they’d want it gone rather than buzzards all over the roads for the next couple of days. Problem with most hit deer is the side that was hit is usually worthless. I don’t pick up too many anymore other than to move them off the road or finish them off. Short story...my sons called me about a deer with a broke back not too far from the house and told me to come take care of it. By the time I got there a young lady in work clothes from a local pizza place had pulled up as well. I thought this ain’t gonna be good. Another older gentleman pulled up and asked what I was going to do, I told him I was gonna put this deer out of its misery. He agreed with me so I popped her in the head with my trapping pistol. The young lady watched the entire thing and said what you gonna do with it now? Thinking this wasn’t going to go well, I asked her what did she want me to do with it? She floored me when she said, “Y’all think it would fit in this big plastic bag and in the trunk of my car? She said I get off at midnight and could put it in our deep freezer until then when I could take it home and clean it.” So...we loaded that little doe up in her car and she drove away, lol!! Haven’t ordered a pizza from that place since! Your good to go in Georgia. Just load it up...take it home...jerk the hide off of it...cut it up.....no further action required to possess it. Can pick up any roadkill in Ga EXCEPT alligators, birds of prey, and protected/threatened/endangered species. Roadkilled bears you must notify DNR but can keep bear.

Chris Wow I did not know that. I thought you had to call the sheriff's dept yet. Thanks for the info.
