I'm just getting into trapping, and want to keep my first few furs for myself. I am trapping muskrats. My end goal is to hopefully have a hat made this season. I tried tanning one myself, and it did not go well. I ended up tearing it in half. I think I'll send the rest to a tannery. What is the best tannery out there for small quantities of furs to be processed? A local tannery quoted me at $25 per rat, which seemed very expensive.

Sleepy creek tannery 1 to 5 skins. 11 dollars apiece. You'll also have to add shipping to your final cost. Keep a couple for yourself to try and tan again. Ripping one is no big deal we all do it. It's part of the learning process. Keep at it and good luck

Thanks for the advice, I'll look into it. I'm probably going to try another one at some point too.
