...on an initial comb of a coyote? Just didn't want to be getting too aggressive, thanks.

That seems like quite a bit of fur, but it depends on the coyote. Has this coyote been washed and dried before combing? How dirty and/or matted was the pelt? You can pull a lot of fur if it’s dirty or matted. Is this the initial combing before fleshing or is it on the stretcher?

This was the first combing. The fur was pretty matted, not very dirty. I'm not set up to flesh, I normally just comb it, then freeze, just was wondering if I was doing something wrong or not. I don't have a lot of experience, just trying to learn. Thanks for your reply.

You will always comb out some under fur.
Talking to Robert the other day and he Is trapping In Kansas and he's seeing coyotes starting to break. He was considering releasing those bad ones.

Sorry, but why in the world would someone release a coyote?

On the initial combing you might try starting by the tail and work in sections toward the head. It may help in keeping the underfur from balling up on the comb. Take your time working the comb down to the hide. It can be frustrating working the mats out! If it’s matted to badly you may not get them out.
I would say you could put some type of hair conditioner on while combing but I have never tried freezing a pelt that had that on it. I’m not sure that would come out very well.

one thing i have learned from growing up with German shepherds is no matter how much you comb and see come off it is never ending, i feel coyotes or similar so its a natural occurrence

If I ever have another coyote in a trap, I'll try that OC.

Why kill something If your not going to use It. Next trapping season that coyote may be worth $70.00.
