Anybody ever see large rafts of coots anymore. Haven’t seen any in several years here in W Michigan.....the occasional 3-6 but not the huge 100 plus rafts anymore.

I believe all your coots have migrated to Lake Seminole in SWGA, lol. Best diver decoy spread is a few dozen coots and a dozen or so divers. Just a little white to break up all the black.

I haven't seen 30 coots in my entire life. They're just not common around here. Canadian geese, mallards and wood ducks are very common here.

Use to hunt Bayou Gauche in south LA with some local coonasses.... They call coots "pouldeau" and weren't afraid to display them proudly. There's be a few times I've scooped coot feet out of their gumbo.

That is 100% Here in the fall they raft up, 100's in places. Then one morning they are all gone.

My Great Grandfathers recipe for coot goes like this:

Put 2 gallons of water in a pot.
Clean coot and put it in the pot.
Put a brick in the pot with the coot.
Salt and pepper to taste.
Bring to a boil, put lid on pot and turn the heat down to a very slow boil.
Leave on stove for at least 8 hours.
When you think it's ready, throw the coot away and eat the brick.

Coots are extremely common here at the right time of the year. They gob up in the marshes in the fall and, like stated above, all at once they all lift off during the night------and head south. I have never seen a flock of coot flying south in a "v" formation.....I visualize the plump son-of-a-guns bouncing south about 4 feet off the ground, feet dangling or paddling like mad to keep them off the deck. I admit to whacking the odd coot every now and again. Heck, once I even shot a daily 15 bird limit of airborne coots on purpose! Unfortunately they are not in the same family as grouse when it comes to eating, so I only did the daily bag limit thing once. Barf. If they did taste like a Pat, I would water swat them by the bushel basket full every fall!

Use to see coot up here on the Mississippi, not hardly any more. Only time i shot them was for a coworker from Louisiana, i swear he could make anything.

Hundreds sometimes thousands off the bridge where I drive to work everyday, from about October to February, unless the lake freezes.

In the rice fields in CA they were everywhere during duck season.

Ol' Dad is right. They are commonly a night migrater. The Italians would hunt them and supposedly make a decent stew but I never ate it. There is a fast way to breast them where you stand on the wings and pull the feet or vice versa. Never tried that either.

By the way, it is Poule d'eau, which means water hen.

Spruce grouse come apart the same way. Step on wings, pull on legs, then pick up the wings and cut the breast off.

My kids hunted Killbuck Wildlife area a couple weeks ago and saw 200+ coots.
