Been hearing about how Beaver Tail is a great bait for ice fishing. Anybody use it? Do you precut and freeze or do you use some kind of preservative?

Thanks!

We use beaver tail cut into 1/2" wide 2-3" long strips for jigging mackinaw. Stays on better than sucker meat. the white/brown contrast is a plus.

I've gone pretty much to beaver tail jigging walleyes through the ice. I'm thinking one tail would last me for years and I fish a lot. A LOT!

I can't comment about panfish but I have to believe it would be as good or better than wax worms.

Ive used it and it works very well here . I also use it for trout fishing and that works as well . I cut it into various shapes depending what I'm fishing for . Some I use plain and some I soak in different fish attractants like gulp alive , shrimp etc.

It's all I've been using for about 12 years now. Works great for panfish. When it's very slow it gives the fish something they don't normally see. Quite often I out catch buddies fishing with me using the same jigs.

I have been cutting1 to 2 inch long triangles very thin for pan fish bigger for walleye and pike. Amazing action. Got a couple trout last weekend on it nice thing is you can cut larger pieces to fit any jig or spoon. Try it moosetrot you will like it.

I've tried it, both cutting my own and the commercially available stuff from Gullickson Bait Co. Didn't seem to work any better than wax worms in my experience. It did last on the hook better than waxies though, and the commercial stuff was colored. Though it has to be kept refrigerated for long term storage or it will lose its color and turn brown. Found that out this year when I went through my gear getting it ready for ice fishing season.

I soak cut pieces in salmon oil for kokanee. It is just about the same color as white corn.

I use it, cut in in wedge shape and 1/2" long thin strips- I store it in Gulp Alive juice. No significant advantage on a comparative scale to waxies, mousies or spikes. It holds up much better when the bite is on, the grandkids hammered the perch this spring on Barbie poles off the pier with beaver tail strips.

I use it for winter walleyes and panfish almost exclusively now . Stays on the jig very well.
