About to finish these for some Last minute Christmas presents. both are stabilized wood. Spalted maple and natural buckeye burl. wanted to have these done sooner, but work and our side business has been overwhelming. I hate being under the gun to get a present done. finished sanding to 1500 grit, thinking tung oil for finish.

epoxy in a vacuum bag with the wood?

i have a maple burl I could cut up but went with an easy cherry I had for a couple years on my last batch

Beautiful, yet practical. Best of both worlds. Excellent work

Great gifts- I use a lot of pure unadulterated pure tung oil- the build-up and dry time can take weeks before the finish is ready. If you're in a time crunch, you could go with a polymerized version, i.e.' Minwax or Watco that will give you a durable finish with a polyurethane protective coat

a wood that has very nice looks but is weak on it's own so it is soaked , pressurized or some how treated with a polymer any voids or air pockets filled with the polymer it then becomes strong and machinable

stabilized wood is expensive, and a lot heavier than the normal dry weight of the same wood block. it's also a little harder on tools, and burns easy if sanding to aggressively. however, the finished product is water resistant and extremely durable. I have been making knife handles, accents for blades, and pistol grips at a stabilized wood for a while. it is well worth the cost.

I really like them. Do you buy knife blanks or forge them from scratch?

Looks like nice usefull blades, someones going to be happy! did you forge the Damascus yourself? 1095/15n20? I like multiple coats of antique oil for walnut, it gives an eggshell type satin finish thats nice. But i havnt used stabilized wood before.
