I have a friend with a new AR pistol. What red dot or other optic would you buy? Primary for home defense.

Extra credit if it’s leupold or burris.

Do people use red dots for close quarters stuff like that? Light and a lazer is what my friend has on his home defense gun, but his is a sig p365.

How big is his wallet?

On the lower end the primary arms and holosun with the acss reticles get great reviews.

The ar pistols are acceptable for alternative methods season here in Missouri. I bought my wife one last year and put a sig Sauer Romeo 5 on it. Really nice little site. Have been real happy with it and would recommend it for that platform. It's pretty accurate out to around 75 yd.. she plans to shoot a doe with it tomorrow morning.

Yes, a true 1x red dot or prism can be shot both eyes open and are extremely fast to use. Combine that with a flip mount magnifier and you have CQB sight with the ability to reach out. Or one of the 1x6 or 1x8 scopes with true 1x can serve the same purpose though they will be a touch slower due to the whole scope eye box thing. The scope option is more of a patrol mid to long rig that can also do CQB where the former is more CQB that can do long.

Go to YouTube and dig up InRange TV. Specifically their What Would Stoner Do series on how Eugene Stoner might reimagine the AR platform with today's technology. Ian and Karl did quite a few videos covering optics options.

The AR pistol undoubtedly has a brace and inadvertently get used much like an short barreled rifle. Shame on you if that happens. Lol

Your friends sig as a true handgun is probably best with irons, light and laser. Though we do now have holographic sights small enough to be specially designed for mounting atop pistol slides and many are going that route as there is a huge advantage to plastering the dot as compared to lining up the notch, the post and the bad guy all at the same time. However there is a learning curve involved in the mechanics in getting the gun from holster to eye to on target.

I have an Eotech on my AR pistol and love it. It is cowitnessed with the iron sights as a back up. Great for varying eye relief distances. I had a sight mark and it was junk. I have a Sig Romeo on my AR12 and it has performed well for the price point.

Even if the pistol has a brace there will not be a referee there calling a foul while defending your home. As the great Clint Smith says “If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck”

Irons would not be a bad option something like the flip up Magpul type leave the larger aperture open at very close distances you need to look over the top sight to put it where you actually want it

GI's used to file a notch in the top of their rear peep sight on M1 rifles, if they were doing close in fighting it may not have actually been necessary but if you set the notch up for say 25 feet

a prism sight like a Vortex 1x spitfire.

I realize the lithium batteries in my gun mounted flashlight could go out however I am much more likely to see a 300+ lumen light on and turn it off than red dot

the prisim sight is etched glass and still visible just not lit when the battery is dead

my bump in the night gun is irons with a light

still getting the shorty fully equipped but it has the Vortex prism on it I can ring steel decently at 200 with that which is not HD distance exactly but you get the idea of the distance it is capable of

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

look on eBay or fb for those cheap reflex sights, I have them on 2 AR pistols (7") and can hit 6" targets at 100 really regular.

Ok here goes nothing for home defense I'd say any magnification like a prism scope would be more of something else to slow you down when your life depends on it's and iron sights would probably be a pain in the rear. Personally I'd go with some kind of reflex sight or red dot.I'm not sure that the brand will matter much you just want a long battery life and something your comfortable with.

Sig Romeo with a motion activated on/off function. Turn it on and forget it. The battery will last forever. My Romeo 5 has the solar charger on it too but I don't really know if that's needed or not.
