Word got around town that I’m pretty handy after doing some work for my parents and friends, and I have been asked to replace a subfloor, vinyl plank flooring and bathtub in a 64 square foot bathroom. I’ve figured up the materials cost minus the bathtub at $320 with 10% built in for price adjustments. I’m having a hard time figuring out what to charge for labor. I think I can get it done in 18 hours total, figuring in 20% for unforeseen events, so I’m thinking about charging $650 for labor. Is that a reasonable price? I don’t want to price myself out of a job but at the same time I don’t want to work for less than a fair wage. Thank you for your input.

Remember , it almost always seems to take longer than ya think.
I think you are underpriced. Guesstimate how much a pro would charge and undercut that price , not undercut another handyman's price.

I do that stuff and charge at least $70 an hour. Just repaired a split rail fence in 12 hours for $950 labor (bid price), but I busted my butt on that.

I think that is a fair price for labor. If you are happy with that amount per hour then I would go with that price. I also would do those handyman jobs by an hourly amount instead of by the job. Be up front what you think it would take for hours to do the job and the amount. If takes less or more hours then that is what they pay.
You will stay busy having a fair price and staying out of the bidding wars for work.

That’s a fair price. I did approx 3000 sq foot vinyl plank job and charged $3500. Took me 80 hrs by myself. Owner was tickled at the price. He bought material. The only tear out was old 2” base board. I put up new 4” base board and quarter round. I was happy he was happl

You are Licensed, bonded, and paying taxes, Right?
You are competent enough to accomplish in hour at least as much as those money grubbing professionals. Right?

I am not licensed. Under Nevada law I’m allowed to take on projects that are under $1,000 without a license. I will be paying taxes on it though. I’m definitely capable of doing the job. I’m just getting stated doing jobs like this one on the side. It’s just me by myself, so I doubt I can get nearly as much done in an hour as a contractor who would bring in a crew.
Thank you all for your advice.

If you are getting a lot of request for work you are working to cheap. Around here ANYONE that will work are getting request to work. Putting a 12 +30 addition on my detached garage/ fur shed/ boat storage and it has taken me 5 months to find someone that is not covered up. !!!!! Oh yea they wanted to start in sept .So I guess they were covered up too.

Thank you all for your advice. Way to get around that 1000 limit is make it into several "different" jobs lol .Tile, tub install, ect

Are you licensed and bonded or just competing with the guys that are?

Have you installed vinyl plank flooring before? Click together junk or glue down?
