I’d go 5-6 feet each way of those two trees making flat spots for the cat to step. He’s showing the stride. Of course one or two of the center flat spots would have traps.

Good news and good news. First, there are lots of guys making a good rub lure and quite a few right here this board. I have used ground up castor with glycerin and had great results. 2nd, you have identified a natural place to make a cat rub but quite honestly I have great luck making my own. When Osky mentions going to each side and setting I not only think he is correct but also that you can plant you own post and use it to make a rub set that does not have tree roots to work around.
If you are in a snow thaw, snow thaw weather cycle I would highly suggest setting exposed pans and boxing them in with sticks so the cat has to step on the pan to rub his face on the post. It works
