I have been using conibears but I am getting some DPs. a neighbor asked me if I could help him with coons in his yard. he is worried about his dogs tearing into the live coon caught in the DP(not a pretty sight for youngsters to watch). he has huge fallen oak tree in his backyard, I thought I could drill a hole in a horizontal limb and put in a DP trap. silly?

thanks

You could lose some after the catch. I've had a couple take the trap up a tree (it was on a drag) and they would be gone the next day. I believe they would fall, and the weight would allow the paw to pull out when they hit the end of the chain.

i was going to attach the chain to the tree with a nail, it has a big horizontal limb about 6 ft off the ground

Give it a shot. I would short chain it where the raccoon can't dangle and hopefully just sits on the branch or in the y of the tree.

Certainly not a ideal set. Tell your friend to chain his dogs for a week

A cage trap might be a better solution.

If you have live traps that would be a better option and I would put a rebar stake through should keep the dogs from trashing your trap

If it's a neighbor trap the coons in your yard away from the dogs. Cage trap is the solution.

Dangling won’t lose the coon, but being able to grab other branches to pull on will lose some. They need leverage to pull out of a decent DP. I’d use cages or set where dogs can’t get to on the ground though.

I would not set at DP in a tree. Better alternatives would be using those 160 body grips.....if on the tree......saw off a small (3 to 4 inch) limb, but the bait on the end and a 160 between bait and approach of coon. Similar to leaning pole set.

Or, go back to using the coni-boxes, but set them vertical. Bottom is about 6 inches off the ground, coon crawls under, stands up inside to get to bait and sticks his head in the body grip that way. You can do that around a yard, with dogs.

I never though about setting them vertical, thats a good idea, thanks!

If it were me, I'd cage trap them and keep the dogs away.

Cages.

And don't think dogs can't climb. Had a treeing walker that would climb if she could get traction.

If the neighbor really wants the coons gone he'll make accommodations. Alternatively to tying up the dogs the neighbor could check the traps in the morning before letting the dogs out.
