For coyote, and it works. He goes to the pet store and gets the sawdust/straw/wood shavings that all the rabbits, mice, and other rodents live in and puts it in the ground a bit (not covered) and then guides the coyotes in with guide sticks/rocks. Puts his trap about 3 hand widths away off to the left because coyotes are left footed (dominant foot they will have down while the other is raised up). You ever heard of using wood shavings from the pet store or am I being messed with. This was told to me buy the guys buddy who goes hunting and trapping with him.

I've read of a number of people using the nesting material successfully. The rest seems like hogwash.

when I had rabbits I always saved the nesting material for canine trapping. Will catch just as many coons, possums and skunks using it also.

Over the years I have also caught canines using dog kennel shavings.

We have discussed it a couple times over the years.
Also mouse nests we find in our tool boxes and drawers and sheds, etc.

A lot of people use dirty cage litter. Some get it from pet stores for free. I still use hamster litter in dirtholes sometimes

I don't know if coyotes are right or left footed, but if I offset to the right, I caught most all of them by right front foot. Offset to left, caught by left front. Walk through type sets could be either way.

This year all my sets have been off set to the left. I figured most humans are right handed so God probably made animals the same. So when I'm bragging for something with my right hand it's my left bracing on the ground not the right that is reaching. Same side just opposite reason. Either side caught them in the past but over thinking it and trying to up my odds. I did miss a few last year the tracks told me had it been to the left I would have got an introduction not just tracks.

Nesting material for an attractor makes sense. Three hand widths back and left paw setting doesn't make sense to me, based on lots of years running dirtholes and post sets.
But hey whatever works for you and you are confident in using.

Mice are filthy little critters in that they pee where they nest and sleep. Makes sense their bedding would work.

The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.

I don’t know about the pet store but some of the best cover dirt I ever used came out of a hay barn where the square bales were stacked on the dirt floor. All the mice and field rats running through the dirt made good cover dirt.

Back in the 1960s with soil bank and $5 fox bounties we had reds all over the place. Many trappers would set the fields where the manure was being spread as almost all dairy farms daily hauled stall barn manure with a lot of straw bedding. The foxes were all over this as were skunks but if you waited until December then many of the skunks were denned up and we did not have grinners then and very few coons.
