For the record, it’s not typical Canadian attitude.
Just a few on this forum.
It’s actually very embarrassing. SP, what is not true about what I posted. Most people in my forestry dominated area of rural SK would find your lack of knowledge embarrassing.

United States has plenty of forestry natural resources to exploit if we so chose to. We let you export some of your spruce trees so you bush monkeys have some employment. Otherwise, your economy would be reduced you selling each other cordwood for your home heating solutions. LOL w

330, look into it. Honest question. Are you aware how much of your lumber comes from here? It supplies about 1/3 of construction needs there. Are you aware of the tariffs added? (you pay for them) While the idea behind the tariffs was likely well intended (make American companies more competitive price wise) it just led to you paying more for wood from Canada. Your right but why had Weyerhouser U S Plywood and Abitibi all within 60 miles forever never bought building supplies in the last 40 years that didn't come from Canada

Jeffkarsten, same issue here. There’s a local osb mill yet I’ve bought it made I. British Columbia. Seems not overly sensible.

I need to redo the floor in my house. A 30 year old mobile, and the floor is getting soft spots. Was going to overlay it with 1/2" BC fir. Shopping around the other day, prices were about $40 a sheet. Thinking about buying some lumber, dry it, plane it, and cut T&G. Right now it would be cheaper. Good guy I know just put in a plank floor in his home that looks real nice. Ordered it from a place online called Wayfare? I don’t know the company but I know my guy is a real shopper, it may be worth your checking out. Osky

I work in a softwood stud mill in Idaho. The company I work for owns several mills in Idaho and Oregon and a lot of timberland in Idaho,Oregon,Montana and Washington. Up until covid hit a lot of our coastal logs were shipped to Japan and China to be milled there because it was more lucrative to sell our logs then mill them and sell the lumber. I am not sure how much of that is being done now with our prices being so high. Log prices are rising as all mills in our area are running as much as possible. We worked mandatory overtime all summer and fall, went to 40 hours a week for December and are going back to 6 101/2 hour days a week plus one Sunday a month in January. Housing starts in our area are nuts, every piece of property big enough for a house is getting one. Most buyers are people fleeing California,Oregon and western Washington. The tariffs are definitely adding cost to all wood products. The U.S. lumber industry can't meet the demand right now. In the last 20 years we have had numerous mills close and be scrapped out. No new ones are being built because of state and federal regulations and taxes. I expect my company to be out of Oregon in the next ten years because of their higher taxes and regulations. The environmentalists are shutting down manufacturing and logging. It is the perfect storm and no one knows how long it will last. I need to build a garage but I am holding off because I believe a large crash is coming. History shows the wood industry is cyclical and it is due to go down.

Earlier this year, I was told by a lumber place, that it was due to all the hurricanes hitting the south this year? Take it for what it is worth. I worked for Louisiana-Pacific (LP) for five years manufacturing OSB. It seems as though hurricane season would see a significant bump in OSB production but our mill never realized it and it's not LP or any other manufacturer making all the money, there are lots of players in the game and the market is fiercely competitive. Our mill lost money most of the years I was there.

Sundance MtnMan nailed it. Pick up any Forest industry publication in the last ten years, and there is one US sawmill auction after another. Now the demand for mostly softwood lumber, plywood and OSB has increased the remaining mills can’t meet the demand. Add to the fact Canadian mills shut down at the beginning of the CHINA Virus pandemic , added to lack of supply. The supply chain was interrupted and it’s going to take time to catch up. In the meantime, the laws of supply and demand set pricing. But just for the record, log and lumber prices crashed in the 2008 recession and have not kept pace with the latest booming economy. That is changing now, hardwood and softwood log prices are on the increase because of demand. So I don’t think lumber prices will drop but further increase.
I’ve made my living in the Forest and lumber industry, we have always exported hardwood and softwood logs to Quebec and Ontario. Any log volume sourced in the US and sent to Canada and then the lumber volume from those logs brought back to the states, is/was not subject to tariffs under the NAFTA agreement. Look at northern Maine, softwood logs cut there go to stud mills in Quebec. Logging roads in the north Maine woods go directly to mills like Maibec in St. Pamphile.

Now the demand for mostly softwood lumber, plywood and OSB has increased the remaining mills can’t meet the demand. The market for OSB is so saturated, the LP plant in my town is seriously considering converting their manufacturing to siding. The plant has been here since the early eighties. Interestingly, the plant was busier under Obama than it has been under Trump.

What is making the lumber prices keep rising. The price for a sheet of 7/16 OSB was at $23.85 2 weeks ago and now it sets at $29.15 a sheet. The timber price to make theOSB is around 3 dollars a ton to the land owner, so it sounds like price gouging to me. This line of thought doesn't consider the costs of the labor, drying, adhesive, equipment, trucking, taxes, rent and other costs that go into producing that sheet of OSB. In a lot of ways, it's similar to people that don't understand that saran wrapped hamburger on a foam tray used to be a cow. I'm surprised a landowner sees $3/ton for chip grade scrap fiber.

In this area they used to haul the logs pre cut to the landing using a Bison skidder. Now they are cut and stacked by the feller then picked up and dragged to the landings whole. They buck for length at the landing, logs stacked ready for trailer load and transport What has changed in the last ten years is all other parts of the tree being now at the landing go into a semi sized chipper right there in the woods which feeds empty semi backs with chips headed for the mills as well. Not nearly the waste their used to be but still a mess to try and trap/hunt in the log offs they leave. Osky

Posco If you have extra OSB send it our way. It is almost impossible to find here and when you do you spend a fortune for it. Every mill in our area has been working O.T. and builders can't find any.
