How would you get a plastic cap, the size that is on a quart of oil, out of a 120 gal. fuel tank?

LOL, with a lot of luck...

Can you get one of those thin rod, grabber thingees with the little claws on the end that open and close with a button on top...??? Or maybe a dowel with a cut off and sharpened self tapping screw on the end?, pin it down and screw into the cap...

I like gcs's idea with the claw thing. If you can drain the tank, and get lucky to push the cap into view through the filler spout, it might just work... like he said with alot of luck.

well I don't know about oil caps in fuel but it was sure handy for getting dollar bills out of 5 gallon water cooler jugs

this and a good light

I assume the cap is floating?

I assume you can see it and this is the tank under the door on the dump truck and not a long filler neck

what about filling the tank so close to the top you can just reach in with your fingers and grab it . if the filler is at the rear of the tank you might need to get 7/8 full then park on a down hill incline then add a few more gallons

I was thinking if I filled it up and stirred the tank with a stick to create a funnel it might pull the cap in it and have it circle long enough for me to grab it. I’m gonna try it. Will let you know.

Big question is how did it get in there? Inquiring minds want to know! Prolly won't hurt anything leaving it in the tank.

if you can see it, get a piece of baling wire. bend a v in the bottom of it so its about a quarter inch long on the short side. turn the cap over so the threads are facing up using the wire. stick the v in and gently pull it up. i can see that cap getting over the fuel exit and plugging it up.

Make an oversize minnow dip net with a piece of 1/2 or 3/4 plastic pipe and small cable like a deathray, with a panty hose leg& foot on the end.

The caps are easier to get than the plastic wrap off a bottle of fuel addative.
Have used a transfer pump with a screen on the suction and just recirculate back into tank.

Leave it in there. What’s it going to hurt?

I have one of those grabbers with the little claws. It's about 18" long. I have used it to retrieve things like nuts that had fallen into a spot too tight for my hands and other similar situations. I think I bought mine at a Harbor Freight store for cheap. It has come in handy many times.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

Didn’t get to test my method as he ran it low on fuel today. Back at the shop this afternoon he had already started fishing. He pulled an old fuel sending unit out that was rolling around in there. lol The plastic cap was not plastic, it wasn’t even floating. It looked like a bottle cap but was like cardboard. Fuel logged and laying on the bottom but moving around when the fuel stirs.

Thanks for the suggestions, I believe he used at least two of them.
