My family and animals require to much space. The freedom is very appealing. Now if I want to move I would have to deal with selling my farm ect...

I love the idea of living out west with more room and less people than east of the Mississippi and being able to move around tell I found our where would be a bonus.

Stuff and land is nice but also locks you down and limits what you can do.

I need to build another barn now.

Regardless of your financial situation I would not buy new but well kept used and save a lot of money. You wont eat the depreciation as bad. Try it and if you don't like it it's not like you can't sell and buy or rent a house and by that time you should have a better idea of where you may want to live. Or more importantly where you do not want to live.

I would buy small pieces of land in both places and build small camp style houses.

Could be 3 months or 3 years and I might say I had enough. Might rent one for 3 months when the time comes see if I like it. I know one thing I don’t want to work in a RV Park 3 days a week so I can pay out $35.00 a day or $1000.00 a month to park my RV. When I retire I want to retire. Ha ha ha. You guys are making a lot of sense. Ha ha ha. Thanks for the good advice. MD

I know a couple who live in Anchorage in the winter and spend five months living in a truck camper. They pull a cargo trailer. Fish all summer and spend the fall berry picking. They have a canning setup in the cargo trailer. They've been doing it for years. Cocktails at 4:00.

I call him to get my fishing reports.

Martyd I lived in a 28' 5th wheel for over 5 years. I traveled thru out most of the midwest and west. I can point out he drawbacks and many positives if you're interested. I researched all modes of RV life before buying a 5th wheel over a pull behind, class c, b or class a.

I still travel to fish and hunt during most of the year. I've a home base yet use a slide in truck camper while pulling a boat to savor wanderlust.

Find you a place to lease in those areas. Duplex condo let someone else worry about up keep. The money you are going to spend you can find 2 places easy. BUT you may not want to be around people.

I drink coffee with a 92 year old single guy, that built a boat in his shop. Sailed down river from Illinois to Tarpon Springs, Fl.
Lived on it for 45 winters in the marina.
Then there is a guy on here that spent his life on the water, but now lives on his houseboat in the woods.
Go figure?
Ain't America Great ?!!!

I know several people who live in them year round. What it amounts to is how much are you willing to live without?? Shop, tools, hobbies etc.
I know of people who help out in State Parks as attendants from March 1 to October 31 they get free full hookup for helping in the park 40 hours a week and then head south for the winter. They love it.

Good luck with your decision.

Should have less than 10k into a really nice van set up, far less into a less than perfect setup. May not be a good long term solution for living in but you wouldn't lose so much to depreciation and would offer you a chance to try out the lifestyle.

Yup.
Lived in an Astro for 2-1/2 years. Not bad once you get the hang of it.
RV's are a huge waste of money.

You're not wrong.
250-450sqft tiny homes are inexpensive to build and maintain.
If you're not gardening or raising livestock, you don't need much land.

My friends in Oregon lost his home to the fires this summer. They purchased a used motorhome and are living in that. They do plan to rebuild but until then they'll be trying out life on the road.

some good discussion. I would rent one for a few months and see what YOU think.

Cold in winter and they drop in value like a rock, so don't buy new.
