My families Cody heritage (I'm related to William F. Cody's grandfather, has been traced to the Isle of Jersey off the coast of France. The Cody name was originally L' Escaudé, and my ancestors came from this island where the people spoke French, were subjects to the Crown of Britain, and most likely attended Anglican Church.

Anyone else from the Isle of Jersey and like to hunt buffalo?

Isle of Mann, the Leoid of clan MacLeod was a grandson of Olaf the Black last viking King of Mann. That viking blood is why I don't play well with others. LOL

grin The Viking title is said to be more a job description than any group of people. Pirates and plunderers or Vikings to those who feared the gathered Scandinavians. I read somewhere the Cimbri (earlier ancestors) would war against the Germanic people often and if the men were losing the women would slit the throats of the children and then themselves as to not be taken prisoner.

And we think we have it tough when the grocery store is outta our brand of goodies.

For whatever silly reason I got off on a tangent learning about the Anglo-Saxon "migration" and studying the roots of the English language... Mostly old English and old Norse. The languages are similar enough that linguists are reasonably certain that the Angles and Saxons would not have had too much difficulty communicating with the Vikings when they showed up.

Old English is tough to read.... at first. But once you learn how to work around the vowel shift and a few differences it starts to make more sense. There are only about 1000 or so old English words remaining in the modern English vocabulary. But they are 1000 of the most "important" or widely used words in our daily communications.

There's even a subculture of people out there who have taken to communicating in a version of English (Aenglish) that has none of the influences of Latin/French and the later Greek influences. It sounds somewhat antiquated or archaic when spoken. But it's completely understandable.

No Buffalo Bill in the blood as far as I know, but the folks who stayed in France begot King Louis XV, so we have that going for us.

Very cool!
I find it fascinating how the names were sounded out in English to accommodate ease of assimilation in the New World. L' Escaudé became Cody for instance.

I worked in Jersey for a couple months back in march and April 1976.
St Heliers is the main town.I worked with an Irish crew on a building site out in Gorey.
Very nice place at that time.Lots of flower farms-they supplied flowers to the english markets. Not far off the coast of France, much closer to france than england.Good seafood there. There was a ferry to St Malo France and another to Southampton England.Mostly a bilingual Island French and English.Interesting early history-the original inhabitants had a problem with inbreeding.
The Nightlife on the Island was great back in 76.Lots of young people went there for work summers from Ireland and England.
Another interesting fact about the channel Islands-Sark-the smallest of the 4 main Islands had no motorized vehicles and was a hotspot for pirated goods like booze and cigarettes from mainland europe laundered in Jersey and Guernsey destined for England or Ireland.

Jersey was actually occupied by the Germans in WWII and was one of the last to be liberated. It was close enough to England that long range artillery duels occurred.

Yes by passed by the Allies, like some of the non-strategic islands in the Pacific held by the Japanese, once the D-Day landings were secured. Not liberated until the actual surrender of Germany 11 months after D-Day.

There used to be a big wine bar in St Heliers.
Spent a few evenings there.Dont remember the name of the place.I bet the building is still there though.
