Is the soil there decent for gardening or is it too sandy? Decent elevation? Anybody live around there or know someone who does?

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

You might want to contact an extension agent in that area. This is a trapping forum.

Things grow very well in Missoula. There's a reason it's called the "garden city".

They seem to grow stinky earthpigs out there real well. Ya know, the able body but refuse to work (or shower) kind. That town is an earthpig hive.

The soil in the valley is good for gardening. However, if you add any elevation off the valley floor it gets rocky quickly. I live in Missoula.

In order to get a decent garden you better check the PH of the garden spot good soil usually is missing something here get it right you will do well.
Some is rocky, some more clay, , you need to add to it in most cases imo
