Had one the other day caught by a hind foot that was rubbed on that leg I think it was from rubbing on the pile of bean scrap he piled in a circle. Funny the buyer pointed out the tail was chewed on like that mattered. LOL. I have had a few pulled hair out on their own I would guess that fluffy snow freezes solid over night.

We had some that were broken in mid December but lately they have been looking good. I was concerned when I saw that. I figured season was over just as I got rolling. Robert texted me on the 7th of December and was seeing the same thing where he was

Movement, texture, habitat abrasiveness, etc, all play in to guard hair degradation rates.
Coyotes in sunflower fields can be worn out in nov. Yep. Sunflower n cattails without deep snow can be tough on them. I like calling in thick cover with a shotgun (riverbottoms) but I get very few good ones. Most are full of burdock and aint worth the time cleaning them out.
swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

Every year I look back at pics of my catch and notice that whether it is late fall, early december, or late January. There are good, bad and ugly coyotes throughout. Whichever month it is cant control whether or not they have lice, fleas, mange, or burrs to the point that they are unsalvageable. Or better yet, a combination of those mentioned. If I quit trapping because I caught a bad coyote, I'd never trap more then a couple weeks. But I'm not a big # s person either. I've tossed a November 1st coyote, a December 20th coyote, and a January 3rd coyote.

I've caught a lot of flack in the past for killing coyotes November 1st. Although the leather isn't prime I'd rather have a November 1st coyote than a January 1st coyote the majority of the time in these parts. After they've been run through fences, thickets, covered in burrs, and laid on snow piles by this time of year it's hard to come up with too many if any you can't find a major defect on. Add in the fact that coyotes are most likely pairing up and breeding...other than the rare outlier coyote trapping is probably getting close to done in relation to fur quality.

Of the 31 coyotes I've caught so far, 14 had to be tossed due to mange. The 17 that I skinned were not very good coyotes. They were weak in the flanks, darker color than normal and just lacking good guard hair. These were caught in the same area that produced very good coyotes the last several years. Sold today for $42.00 average, $78.00 average last year. I realize prices are down, but also reflects in the quality. Interesting that I ran 75% females and nearly all the mangy ones were males. Red, who was doo g the buying. Guys selling to buyers here we’re getting about 75 US dollars per dog in December.

My earlier est. Above is off.
