I use a 3# hammer and a 12" landscaping spike They are twisted and galvanized. Pound a Spike in the frozen ground 3-4inches use a vice grips if you can't pull it out. Just twist it right out. You're making a pilot hole for the DP spike. You want them stable but not in the ground rock solid or when a coon gets caught they won't pull out and allow the swivels to work These spikes work and come back out easy. Becauseof the twist.

I have had dogs knock over traps in loose ground. I use cat and dog food in them for bait......

Rodents are good at removing that kind of bait. Then another critter may be coming along and knocking them over looking for the bait.

Hammer spike in and then use a light zip tie to hold trap to spike. Or get 3/8 rod long enough to anchor with 6 inches stick out of ground, and zip tie to it. If using pull triggers, make sure triggers are tuned That may work but lot of trouble and extra weight to carry. Like I said coon will still get caught if you have something that won't fall out if they turn it over.

Is this a common issue you guys have come across? I have about 20 set over 100 acres and 1/2 of them keep being knocked over. I caught a big boar and two German Shepard’s were “In the area” when I got there. The landowner doesn’t know who’s dogs they are, could they be the culprit of the knocked over traps? Could the coons be using them as leverage to reach deeper into them? Could deer come by and lick around it knocking it over? I don’t usually find any tracks near them. If you had 20 dp's set and only caught one you may want to move your sets around. As all will say put them in their trails. I use dps on waters edge like a pocket set. Can set 10 while making one pocket set. I use a cable with a loop on the end. Wrap it around a sapling and drop the trap thru it. Push stake in ground move on . Strawberry marshmallows on the trigger. With about every 3rd one got fish based lure. That is the possum catchers.
