There is a red fox creeping around the yard. I think my dogs plan to kill it. How likely do you think it is that they are going to get it?
My female has already beat me to a coon in a griz and did enough damage that I had no choice than to shoot it.

Well, Dachshunds are scent hound dogs bred to hunt badgers and other tunneling animals, rabbits, and foxes. Hunters even used packs of Dachshunds to trail wild boar.

Fox is to long legged and quick for those short legged dogs.

They may be little but a dachshund fears nothing. We’ve owned several throughout the years when I was a kid. Tough little jokers.

I've owned 2 and they're death on groundhogs or anything that runs in a den. They'll dig 'em and drag them out. make no mistake, they're like ferrets!

If you want 2 dead dogs, let em go. Yes, Doxies are tougher than woodpecker lips but, a wild critter fights daily. In a hole/tunnel/den the Doxie will pull em out, waiting for you to dispatch. In open ground you will be disappointed.

I will gladly feast on those who would subdue me.

I don't know, my two Doxies I think could catch a fox. They are like sausage lightning bolts. The cotton tail rabbits so much as stumble they got them. Female Doxies are faster than males as they don't have the equipment dragging the ground. Mine would play tug of war with a fox. They go from cuddly family pet to vicious killers in a blink. They are at peak from 2 to 8 years old. My one female can find a shot, wounded or lost deer better than I can.

you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!

Doxies work best in little packs. You don't get just one link of sausage.... lol I am partial, I have one laying on each side of me right now. I have to sit in the center of the couch to make room for them. I have a ramp and platform by a window so they can keep watch over the garden and bird feeders.

I had one as a kid. I loved that dog.never could comprehend how she could be so fast but she was. Her back went out and she had to be put down. Not sure how she would fair vs a fox if she could catch one.

Mine are 3/4 wire hair and 1/4 Bichon poodle on purpose. Stronger backs is what that was done for. Modern breeds are not like the German badger dogs. Those were 30 -40 lbs and yes would be vicious under ground dogs. Amazing how humans have adapted k9's to so many different purposes..

Interesting I never looked in to them much. But it was before the internet when she was alive.

Let’s put it this way, I had to chase a dog down that came in the yard when my oldest was a toddler. Why did I have to chase the dog down??? To get my Dachshund off it’s neck! He had a hold a Pit Bull would be proud of. As far as killing a fox, maybe if cornered or attacked, but I doubt they’d chase one down.

When I was a kid, long ago, there was a retired fella that lived off the east end of my parents farm that had a pair that rode in the game pouch of his jacket. My father and I always ran beagles and would occasionally run into him along the creek. He would have his side x side and his two dogs with their heads sticking out of his game pouch. Our hounds would run a rabbit to ground, he would put his dogs down to get them out. Those rabbits would sometimes come out of the hole like their butt was on fire. Didn't know a rabbit could run that fast. Sometimes the dog would drag them out, always a little beat up. Always liked to have those little dogs around. When they would squirt one out to our hounds the race was on again. Fun, fun, fun!
