South Dakota game officials have made it, well, official. Hunters are now allowed to shoot gray wolves on sight year-round, same as coyotes. As of Jan. 4, 2021, this apex predator is no longer protected by the federal Endangered Species Act and this recent action allows South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks to manage wolves as a predator/varmint, as defined by state law. Unlike some neighboring states, GFP does not have any intentions of establishing gray wolves in South Dakota.

Over the past few years, South Dakota has had a handful of gray wolves killed on both sides of the Missouri River. However, according to GFP biologists, South Dakota does not have a resident gray wolf population — those killed in the state likely transient animals that have dispersed from populations in other states.

Under GFP’s management authority, trappers, sportsmen and women, landowners and livestock producers now have the ability to harvest gray wolves across the state. Anyone who harvests a wolf in South Dakota is required to notify a wildlife conservation officer within 24 hours after the kill and then submit the animal for inspection by a GFP representative no later than 48 hours after the kill.

While wolves and coyotes share many physical similarities — and both are now legal to hunt in South Dakota — hunters should be aware of their differences because, as mentioned, wolves must be submitted for inspection.

A wolf’s face is broad and blocky with a large nose pad and short, rounded ears, while a coyote’s face is narrow and pointed with a small nose pad and taller, pointed ears. A wolf measures 26 to 32 inches at the shoulder with a nose to tail tip range of 4.5 to 6.5 feet. Coyotes measure 21 to 24 inches and 3.5 to 4.5 feet respectively. Wolves weigh 70 to 150 pounds while their smaller cousin weighs 15 to 50 pounds. A wolf’s coat is typically grizzled gray but can also be mostly or all black. White or cream color coats rare outside far northern populations. A coyote’s coat is gray or reddish-brown, often grizzled, often with a whitish throat, chest and/or belly. For more information on this development and other South Dakota hunting opportunities, visit https://gfp.sd.gov.

I was thinking of heading there for some coyote hunting. Maybe next week.

Didn't MN mention something about a wildlife corridor or trail leading to the Dakotas a few years back. Something like buying or somehow acquiring land for some such stupid idea. I'm sure they will have to re-think that. Would hate to have a wolf make it there to be killed by some varmint hunter.

Hah! You funny guys you!
Actually I’ve killed my fair share of coyotes in SD, will this new ruling apply to non residents?
What SD is saying in all of its wisdom to states like MN, there are plenty of +$&# wolves you idiots and if you have so many that they have to disperse here, we’re going to shoot their smelly wolf butts on account of we don’t want them.

Osky

PS Governor Noem I love you.

Good deal! Don't want them down here...we're already dealing with the south's armadillos, not to mention the wild hogs that are moving this way!

I have to believe there are a fair number of transient wolves in SD and most likely and established pack or two. North Dakota for sure.

If there isn't there is only one logical explanation for it.

Agreed. I haven’t shot much in the Dakotas the last ten years or so but maybe some in Western ND. I did not see any wolf sign in those days but did see increasing big cat sign.
I did see a set of wolf tracks in SE Montana maybe 18 years ago but that was a one and done.
I’d think with a limited population I’d key on the river ways and adjoining land in Dakotas.

You will have slightly better odds of winning the lottery than shooting a wolf in the Dakotas. (Canis lupus) There are no known populations of wolves in South Dakota. Jul 10, 2019 Maybe there was a population explosion since then.

Same odds of our Mt. lions ending up in other states would be my guess not great, don’t think I’d buy a new rifle and sit out and wait for one to come by. LOL

There was a time when North Dakota didn't have fisher either. When they finally started to show up it wasn't a surprise, we were killing them in the valley on the east side for several years.

There are restablised wolf packs in MN that are surely within spitting distance of the Red River. It would be naive to think they don't travel across the river.

Then again, South Dakota was a state that had eradicated the wolf by the end of the 1920s. The legend and accomplished feats of Dakota Three Toes had been burned deep into the minds of West River ranches and there was no mercy shown. I don't think that mind set has changed much in a century, especially West River...
