As far as turning those otter I always guessed it was to grade for singe. Even when the market could care less about singe during the Nepal/China hot market days Goldberg always graded hard on singe...generally taking 33 to 50% off for it.

waggler, Around here, the adults seem to average in the 26-28 lb. range, and a 32lber would definitely be well above average, even for these coastal otters. The bigger ones are just here and there, not the norm, maybe 10%-20% of my overall harvest will exceed 30lbs.?? Was that 32lber in a targeted otter set, or a surprise catch in a mink or beaver set?? #48 N.H.?? HA!! I know we both have expressed an affinity for those great old otter traps! I didn't really know about otter toilets at the time. I made what amounted to a oversized mink style pocket set with mink musk in the back, a 48 Newhouse (you guessed it) in front, set on a slide wire to a gunny sack full of rocks. This was in one of the silty, glacial rivers in western Washington. Probably the same otter we have in SE. The only difference that I've noticed in the otter from the two places is that surprisingly the otter in SE seem to have slightly shorter hair than coastal western Washington otter. Other than that they are pretty big on average.

I talked to a biologist here in SE who wanted to have an ungrad do a study on the coastal otter here. His theory was that they were possibly a localized subspecies. I think they just have more food available and thus eat a lot and grow bigger. I've seen a few go over 7 ft tip to tip. My 8 yo. Son caught one a trap he won by writing an essay for Teds Fur shed. He set it and helped with the blocking and bedding. I'd say this one is a bit above average for us....a good sized male about 62 inches tip to tip. It was a fenced in trail set leading from toilets to saltwater .#5 bridger. Trap was barely covered. It was a back foot catch. It had 2 swivels and 6 ft of cable on a quick link to a small spruce.
