I've been bluff charged by about every bobcat I've ever caught. I think when they see you and size you up, they decide its not a good idea to start a fight. Last night I was checking and my guess is since my headlamp was shinning on it, it couldn't size me up and figured it could take on the little light. I didn't realize that as I went to get some close video of this cat. So just like I always do, I got in close to get some video, and everyone loves a good bluff charge so I was hoping to get one. Well this cat didn't bluff. And since I was only expecting a bluff charge, I didn't move till it was almost too late. If I was a split second slower, she would have got me. Luckily all I had to do was clean the mess out of my underwear haha. And if you like big sheds, I was looking for the match to a big shed I found a few weeks ago and thought I found it. Once I got home, I realized its from a different, even larger buck. I had to pull about 30 traps, ( I explain why in the video), and made a few new sets so it was a long night. Didn't get home till 1am, but still had a great time.
If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.
Close call, and you'll eventually lose a cat that will pull out.
With the exposed trap sets with Mike Kelly's expanded pans, a pullout would be very tough. Even with the Bridger #1.65 and MB550s that I use, all the catches are deep and above the pad. The cat would have to lunge so hard that it rips its pad off to pull out. I'm not saying its impossible to get any less of a catch, but I have never had anything less than a full pad in a trap even with MB450s that I've had to use before. This pic I posted is about as bad of a catch that I get. This is a big 43" tom in a Bridger #1.65. https://trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/7102185/wild-river-trap-pans#Post7102185

I got scratched twice b4 I started carrying the right gear. Those drags I am so fond of sometimes give them a lot of room to move when they hang up in the roots of a CRP

Cat Trapper NV- I have always had a question and YOU are the man who could get me an answer (maybe even tonight)
Would a cat bite at the end of the lunge or just scratch up your pant leg a bit? My bet is that they have way sharp teeth and protect them. What I mean is that a K9 would bite because that is all he has backed into a corner but my bet is that the cat would only bite your arm or leg once he has front paws completely around it and effectively immobilizing it b4 he administers a bite. If cats didn't do it that way we would be catching a lot of them with broken teeth.
Why don't you find out for us and I will kick in the first $100 bucks when you post the video for us all!
If you are savvy enough to pad up your leg (think of the guys who train attack dogs) than you can just keep my $100 bill. I'd still gladly pay it if you wanna get me an answer.
Who will kick in with me- lets get the pot up high enough that he snorts Tequila up his nose and sticks a leg inside the catch circle

I had the first one ever get me last week. Had released a few this year and just got careless. Got me so fast it was incredible. Got a sore bunch of fingers on my left hand now.

Haha it’s on! You didn’t even have to offer up the $100, a simple challenge is all it would have taken. But I side with you on this. I don’t think they would bite unless it had too. Claws grow back, teeth don’t. Plus I think they know claws would do more harm that teeth in self defense. They can inflict pain but still keep there neck at a distance. Any video you see of a cat fighting anything, they always use their claws. I’ll wrap my carhart jacket around my leg next time and give it a whirl.

LMBO you remind me of myself 30 years ago. If we are right and they intend to use the claws then the carharts will be plenty but if you ever doubt us (or are low on booze) then duct tap a couple magazines around your pant leg. I am guessing you will need more than my Ben Franklin at the ER if you do get bit LOL
