I have to put a new bushing in a transmission and they say to use Locktite 648 sleeve retainer on it. No one has this around my area but they do have permatex 64040 sleeve retainer. According to permatex, this is the same as locktite 640, not 648. Does any of you know the difference? Will this work? It is the bushing that the axle rides on the drivers side of a Ford escape tranny.

When all else fails, follow the destructions. The difference in numbers may not make a difference, then again it may mean one is insoluble in transmission fluid and the other isn’t or have different temp range . When you consider the labor and possible collateral damage to the transmission I would make sure the numbers match and do it right the first time.
Your mileage may differ, literally!

Another tip is when setting bushing or sleeves with compounds like that. Clean and bone dry, no hint of oil film, zero none. Denatured alcohol or good brake parts cleaner and allow to dry. I only have experience with the Loctite products.

you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!

Better safe.than sorry. I don't know the difference between the two, but I'd use the right product.
