I have a beaver sitting in the freezer, and I was planning on tanning it and turning it into a hat like the one shown on the link. I was wondering if you had a better pattern or if there were flaws with it.

That is a good pattern,I have used it before.
Minimal cutting and sewing.Better to make the pattern a bit bigger than cut it too small. You can cut and sew a few darts around the bottom of the hat if its a bit loose, not much you can do if its too tight.

The write up suggests a pelt at least 19" wide. Is there any shrinkage that needs to be planned for when selecting stretched and dried pelts to send to the tannery,

I plan on tanning my own beaver hide with the stuff in the orange bottle I was looking at the instructions, and it didn't say to stretch the hide like you normally do is that correct or was I reading it wrong.

If you do not stretch and break the hide it will be stiff and hard as a board.I would not use the orange bottle tan for something I was wanting to make something out of.

I send my big beavers to the tannery,I tan small ones myself.
For hats I use a combination tan-mineral/veg.or a syntan (KT).

Yuck! That woman is gross.

Alone in the northern wilds trapping beaver day after day week after week....She might start looking good to a lonely canuck. She does have nice toys, can kinda hunt. But that constant talking in the third person she does...

you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!
