Hazmat shipping is required. I find it to be a convenient excuse to bilk you out of extra cash... Am I really supposed to believe that an extra $27.50 means the FedEx guy will show up sweaty and nervous like he's handling nitroglycerin? Or do they simply segregate those hazmat packages from everything else? Piling them all together in a designated area sure seems like a bad idea... If one blows it sets all the rest off The question is how do they know there are primers in the package unless they detonate during shipping/handling? Do they run the packages through a "sniffer" to detect possible hazardous materials? I'll never instruct anyone to violate federal law... Of course in a few weeks that may be up for discussion. Mike

After some research, I discovered that it is legal to ship empty brass with live primers installed. One way around that!

That 27.50 is a scam. I had a hazmat endorsement for several years. Loads didnt pay any more than non hazmat. Those placarded loads are a royal pain. So I quit hauling them and didnt renew.
Now before the government decided we should have a state issued federal license, there was no endorsement required and hazmat really did pay more. So you figure out the why and wherefore. I am not smart enough.

bullets are shippable, live ammo is shippable when packaged properly, but not primers or powder. You must be talking about UPS rather than USPS. Live ammo is absolutely prohibited in domestic mail https://www.usps.com/ship/shipping-restrictions.htm

I get the restriction on primers. Primers as packaged would probably be fine. However. loose primers are a different subject. Back in the late 70's my cousin literally blew his hand off when he picked up a mason jar half full of rifle primers.
