Yep, my heeler is the best dog I've ever had. Definitely the smartest. This is the second litter out of her and my neighbors Australian Shepherd. I've been happy with the pups, but I don't know if they'd be good for hunting

I had a red heeler that would find downed deer for me at the age of 8 months.
Given enough time and a smart dog they can do almost anything you want them to.

Thought I had the smartest heeler in the land. Not. Tied for first though.

When I was a kid, my great grandmother had a big collie dog that was a squirrel hunting machine. He was a great family dog and was maybe a little overly protective of us kids. I also had a beagle who would hunt about anything. Great rabbit hound, but would hunt pheasants, Pat's, squirrels, and fox. Of course, providing there wasn't rabbits around. He also liked feral cats. Always some action when you took him out.

I went and got the van and drove down the road looking for her caught her crossing an empty field a half mile down the road and she decided it would be ok to come get in the van.

we got her 5-7 years old from the pound in April we will have had her 9 years, great dog, did excellent on obedience training I can set a piece of meat down and say leave it and she will stare at it until I tell her to take it , doesn't chew , doesn't get on furniture , comes when called will work hand signals with a little practice. stays at my wife's side wherever she goes ,but does not like loud noise at all she will try and get under the desk or even go to the basement when fireworks go off outside.

I haven't tried hunting with my GS but he goes shooting with me all the time... The noise doesn't seem to phase him at all. But he whines because he sees me lay down prone and doesn't understand why he can't come over and play with me.

He's coming up on 8 months old and still has all that puppy curiosity and energy. Hopefully he will tone down a bit as he matures.

Thanks for the input guys, it’s giving me hope, I’m gunna try it! Should I just go rabbit hunting with her and teach her that way or work in the yard hiding dead ones and praising her when she does?
