I had sets frozen down covered with snow it looked like the yote did the “Lord of the Dance” on the pan I set the area not a formula of any sort, set what the location calls for is my advice.

It doesn’t matter.what matters is quality bait and subtle guiding. Use the backing and little sticks and dirt clods to force him to approach from the angle you want. That said, If a coyote approaches your dirt hole, sniffs once and walks away, you are going to miss him almost every time. You can set to the right, the left, or center, and if it comes in and works the set you’ll probably have him in the morning. The point of the dirt hole is to put something inside it that the coyote wants bad enough to try and dig it out. If you did it right the coyote will put his feet down all over the place in front of the hole. It’ll dig a bit, step back and look around, circle the set, dig some more, etc. until it gets what it wants out of the hole.
Make a few dirt holes with no trap and sift some soft dirt all over the area so you can see the tracks, and you’ll see exactly what I mean. If a coyote doesn’t work the set like that odds are you’re gonna miss it. And sometimes they don’t work sets. If they have a full belly they probably won’t work a set, other than to pee or poop on it sometimes. But if it’s hungry and you have a quality bait in the hole it’ll spend ten minutes digging at it, and that’s when you’ll get him.
Take all that with a grain of salt. I have a lot of opinions and sometimes they’re wrong lol. But that’s what I’ve observed on my line
"I have two guns, one for each of ya."

The angle of the actual hole will have some effect on how the animal works the hole. I set to the right and and back 10" and place my lure stick 2" right of the hole. Sound familiar.

As jack Whitman explained it to me, most coyotes/wolves are right pawed. So you want to off set your trap to the left. Reason being the coyote will plant its left paw to reach into the dirt hole to scratch out the bait w its dominant right foot. Hope this makes sense. Jacks a pretty smart guy.
