Is that cut or press checkered? Can not tell from pictures, clean up on the checker job and a bit of finish and that shotty will be sweet.

INVEST in Gunsmith Screwdriver Set, gun screws are hollow ground, and only correct tools should be used or the screw heads will get boogered up, no doubt.
Also, INVEST in checkering tools to re-cut the checkering while you are doing the stock.
MidwayUsa or Midsouth shooters or Brownells will have your needs
Been 'smithing since '85 and won't steer you wrong

My advise would be to leave the checkering alone or you will have a winter project! One wrong slip with checkering tools will be something you can't correct. Once you strip the old finish off, either use painters tape to cover the checkering or rub softened paraffin wax into the same until flush. When you're completely done everything else, take a toothbrush and brush out the wax. Then take a SMALL amount of Tru OIl and lightly finger coat the surface of the C'king. DO NOT fill it in with oil!

I refinished my ol Mossberg rifle that my Dad gave me yrs ago, I thought he was gonna have a stroke when he came by and saw it all sanded down! Not long after that, when I got it done, he showed his approval. One of the best feelings I ever had, and I didn't even do a good job! I say do it, and let the naysayers be wary. P.s. I didn't take mine down to entirely new wood, and stained it for a tiger stripe effect, looks awesome, just need to fix the topcoat.

make sure to leave the buttplate and grip cap on when sanding, or use templates like many do, or else the edges will be rounded and look goobed up
