Switching out 3 old 6" recessed lights with 3 canless halo 6" led recessed lights. All was fine with the 2 on the ends of the run. I switched the middle can and now have no power to any of the 3 lights. I have power to rest of the circuit and the light switch. The kitchen and patio lights are on the same circuit and are working fine.

I decided to try another brand of similar lights and still nothing. They are connected with the box style wire nuts.
The other brand worked before but the trim was too small for the opening so I switched it to the halo's.

I can't get into the attic area above the dining room (where the lights are) as it is a vaulted ceiling with maybe 8" of clearance.

Have you tested the middle light to see if it's functional?

I would go back over all the wiring and replace all the wire nuts to start with. There might be a broken wire somewhere.

Not being there but how you are describing your issue, I would say you have an issue with the hot lead in that box. If you had a poor connection on the ground/neutral you would get high voltage because it would be looking for that ground. You have a hot wire that isn't connected somewhere.

Good luck Adam.

do you have a volt meter?

after I checked for power at the first non working light if you don't have it. I would be looking at the last working light for the issue , it works but may not be sending power on to the next light in the circuit.

I've cut back wires, switched the lights which have different wire nuts (push in style). Only thing I have is a voltage tester since every tool was stolen & slowly getting tools
I'll have to look at the switches which is on a 3 gang. Thankfully I have new dimmer switches.

Snowy do you think the hot wire is loose at the switch? I've switched the lights and same result

I avoid push in type as much as possible

yes it takes longer to strip, bend and screw down but it is also about 95% more surface area

If you don’t have power at any of the lights and the power is coming from the switch you have a problem at the switch

It could be a push-in connection that is the problem. Most definitely a hot lead that is open/bad connection and there isn't continuity on that hot leg somewhere.

Thanks I'll try replacing the switch. Might be another can of worms since it's connected on a 3 gang.
Snowy I think your right it has to be bad hot

You switched out three old school cans with three new led ones ...
You realize you need special dimmers to run the led type ...
Try just hooking them up direct or thru a simple switch , ..

when I took residential electrical at a community collage circa 1995 the master electrician instructor said you will not use those push in connectors I don't care if they are there.

then again the whole world has changed since then running natural gas in flexible coils of yellow piping that was only for hooking up driers and ranges.
I ran all the NG in my house in black pipe hard to everything but the stove and drier. which have short flex from appliance to wall.

seen too many houses blow from bad NG work.

all my water is in Type M copper also old school and now everything is pex and shark bite connectors not sure there are craftsmen any more just assemblers

I know the manufactures are always looking for faster easier and planned obsolescence

Slowpoke, yes the original ones were on a newer dimmer switch.
Went and bought new connectors a touchless voltage tester, micrometer and outlet kit. I lose power from switch to first light. I have to touch the voltage tester to the 1st lights black wires and get an intermittent response as when I get close to the switch or any of the other switches it's constant

broken wire from switch to 1st box

if you wiggle the wires at the first box and get some power it is likely broken close to there

if romex sometimes you can pull a touch more in to the box maybe it is even a break in the box

check out that wire coming from the switch maybe you can get behind the break

Are those lights fed through a junction box? Might be a bad connection in the make up there.

Will an LED work if a hot and neutral are reversed?

Thank you all, I appreciate it.
It was a loose neutral in the gang box. Can't believe I chased that all day lol

Glad you found it but surprised you didn't have intermittent power and high voltage. Usually an loose neutral will produce high voltage.
