Thinking about running a yard hydrant off my well once the ground thaws but got a question or two.
When making connections are all the fittings just simply barbed fittings and hose clamps? I plan on running 1" black water line 6ft deep to a hydrant from the house. I will make my connections inside my house so I have a shut off in line for the hydrant. I will be pulling water from the hydrant for livestock constantly through winter. I worry that the barb fittings will leak over time. Anyone have any thoughts about this project?

Got about 60 yard hydrants with black plastic, hose barb, and clamp for twenty some years and haven't had a leak problem yet.

Use brass at the bottom of the hydrant. Pvc fitting does not stand up to weight and constant use of hydrant. Stabilize hydrant with additional T post at least. Dig out drain pit for weep hole and stabilize under hyddarryant for drainage and constant down pressure applied.

Put in livestock waterer at same time so you dont have to utilze hydrant daily in winter and drain hoses and run heater. I like heavier water pipe, brass fittings - more expensive but I dont want to dig it up. I just put in a Cobett waterer and have had no issues and dont have to check water or run hydrant and drain daily. Well worth it.

I’ve seen that run as you describe a very long ways, and some not below the frost. Drained of course but still subject to moving ground.
I would just be sure I used quality stainless steel clamps.
Curious, do they make a crimp buckle for that type of set up like they use on pex versus stainless clamps?

Brass elbow on bottom, double clamps , warm it just a little with torch to get the black pipe to slide on, mine work great all winter, crushed stone around them.

When I installed my winter water unit for my cattle, I installed a "shut off" along the 3/4" pipe, which was 6 ft deep. I bought a brass "curb stop" at a plumbing supply and connected it "in line", then set a 6" diameter PVC over the line (with two V notches 180° apart, which allow the pipe to sit over the line) and backfilled the trench. Fabricated a long handled T bar for the curb stop. Works real slick.

Thanks everyone for the info.

I'm sure the dog would love it if I wasn't putting a little shed around it. lol I've been looking at the hydrants with the self draining weep hole at the bottom so it drains when its shut off. I plan on having this hydrant run continuous around 2-3 gallons a min to help keep a fresh water and prevent pond freeze up for one of my many duck ponds. I will have another line leaving my shed under ground going to the pond. I plan on doing a good gravel base under the hydrant and stabilizing the best I can. Anyone one know if the hydrants and supplies at the big box stores are as good as the supplies that the well companies want to sell you?

Thanks again!

Here it’s common to wrap the pipe In the dirt with duct tape to keep it from corroding from soil contents. I’d paint the pipe above ground black to make use of the solar heat in the winter months also.

Do not use anything but an Iowa Faucet brand hydrant. Use brass barbed fittings.

I prefer stainless steel to brass but that’s a personal preference, they do make several different ways.

The last one won’t post as a link but but if you go to Dixon look under clamps then go to sleeves you’ll find it.

Iowa hydrants are worth the extra cost - another thing we do - wrap the entire buried part of hydrant with black electrical tape and several inches above ground. I know they are all galvanized or protected but this simple extra dollar will protect the exterior from rust and they all will rust as water will constantly drip down the hydrant and be in a moist environment.
