Feed them pig feed from local feed mill, and water you will have great tasting pork.

Sorry, I’m trying to figure this out. I had to delete and repost.

I raised 2 this summer/ fall. They were only 10# when I got them and were not completely weaned. I started with a pig starter and koolaide to get them to drink. They were raised on a hog grower the rest of the time. Next time, I’ll switch to a finisher ration the last month or so to fatten them up a little better. They went through about 1400 pounds plus plenty of vegetable scraps from the garden hay, grass clippings and “leftovers” from what we didn’t finish. They were close to 7 months old when I butchered them. They weighed 250 before skinning and eviscerating them but they also had a rough start being so young. If you butcher yourself, skin them like you would a beaver and try and keep as much fat on the hide as possible unless you scald them. You’ll realize how much food waste you generate once you have pigs.

The outdoor pen was attached to one of my barn stalls. The inside stall had stall mats on the ground which made clean up really easy until they figured out they could lift them and root under the mats. The outdoor pen had a electric wire at 6” and 18” high and was dirt. The outdoor pen was 16’ x 25’.

I did all of the butchering and processing so that was a high savings. I just smoked the last ham last night and made 25# sausage. I have about another 15# sausage to make and I’ll finally be done processing them

I assume it was on the 40lbs of corn they got every day.

It seems most people here look at one thing cost. If you are looking at cost you are not looking at what goes into your pig which goes into you. A pig that is raised on dirt will have many more minerals available to him than a pig on concrete. Pigs on dirt do not need iron shots! Pigs on dirt will root and find other things to eat which will make them healthier. If a person ate one do all food he would be lacking many minerals and vitamins thats why we take supplements ie vitamins. If you could move your pigs every now and ten you could also clear some brush. On our farm we call the short leg goats. And then if your just looking at cost look at cost it's ok.

We typically have bought 50-60 lbs. feeders and you can go to a grower and finishing ration from the get go. Twice we got 40 lbs. feeders and we bought 1 50 lbs. bag of starter for each pig. They were up to 60 lbs. by that time.
We typically got our feeders in April or May and then we could feed them garden product and other food stuffs. Ours had a small shed and outside run area on dirt. We usually let them get a bit older say 280-300 lbs. as we felt there was more flavor. We watched closely to get longer pigs that would grow and not get over fat at those weights.

Before or after you got them over 300...which is on the high side of butcher weight.
You raise any? Or just buy throw-aways?

Young pigs fed well, good rooting, and grain fed. Best there is.

The people we got them from raised cattle and they found the pigs cheap and had like 150 of them or so. We bought them to be 300lb. They had to be smaller because they grew quite a bit and were only 330lb. They taste good! Fed corn and a little hay every now and then.

One was a boar lol. We didn’t notice because we were to worried about getting out with a it getting trampled by hogs. So we ended up with one hog (the other was my grandparents they don’t have a barn suitable for a pig.) they had names to. Pork chop, bacon (he was long I said that’s means more bacon), and hamlet.

Edit...if you're doing it to survive, do what you gotta...

Pigs are omnivorous. You will get a better healthier product if you feed them that way . They have a completely different fat ,a healthier fat if they have a varied diet . If you mean bread and pastries and chips you might have somthing . If you mean garden and table scraps I would disagree with you . I havnt seen anybody In a ghetto part of town slop hogs since I was a kid . They go down to Wal-Mart and buy their corn fed confinement floor pork like all the other city folk do .

Wild pigs are, but how do they taste? Mine have a run to root around for that stuff. They get that.
Otherwise, grain. And yeah, fresh fruit, veggies, tree fallins and such for a treat. Otherwise, grain.
High protein feed.

I have raise lots of feeder pigs into butcher hogs. I feed ground corn and soybeans. I would get them early summer and finish them off with apples and plums off are tree. And lots of vegs out of the garden. They had a good size pasture to root around in. And make sure you have hog waters for them. The water is very important.

I would butcher mine at 320 to 340 lbs. To me fat means flavor.
