They probably have nice boots these days, but when I did more x-country skiing it was shoes and three pin holes...Pretty useless if you got ice on your shoes...Even with gators on your feet were not warm and dry enough to stand up to a trap line of any kind. Snowshoes for me with boots that can handle slush...
No, but there is now a crossover ski between snowshoe and ski. Looks maybe 4’ long? Wider like a water ski. I’m considering buying a pair. I think one brand name is HOK.

Look for a fiberglass bush wacking ski with metal edges and designed to wear with winter boots that strap in . The skiis are wider than groomed trail skiis and can take a beating compared to groomed trail skiis. They have thier place. I used those type of skiis for ten years and worked good, pulled an otter sled behind. Breaking trail like using snowshoes but when trailed in easy to slide.

I'm currently just using a pair of 'classic' xc skis there perfect to take out after a wet snow making the grooves then if it ices over the groves are perfect to travel along whereas when its icy a snowmobile trail isn't fun at all.

the old finish ski trooper skis would be more what your looking for as they were wider and had more float how ever the real efficiency is not breaking new trail but that the 50 men behind you can use the same trail each can take turn breaking trail then fall back as they tire .
you don't get any glide with snow shoes but you get good float nd your trail keeps getting easier to walk
the skis would likely be the same , I have heard some old timers that use a wide ski with a spring type binding and really like them for getting into places in late winter. they claim better than snow shoes , and they could very well be it is what you are used too
problem is finding equipment these days
here are some modern skis but even in Europe where skis should be king there is apparently only one company making a trekking type ski with a boot binding more like a snow shoe
most modern skis are not even as wide as the foot and the boot just pushes snow unless on packed trails

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
When I was young my Dad and I used Finnish style skis to get to beaver traps. You can go pretty fast empty but with a big load I think snowshoes are better. After a few trips with snow shoes sometimes you can walk on the trail without them.
I spent a few hours once on both skis and snowshoes doing a rough comparison. My takeaway was that in unbroken snow the snowshoes were somewhat better and on a broken trail the skis were about 35% more efficient. Reason I don’t use skis is I don’t have bindings to fit cold weather boots. Otherwise they would be perfect to keep in the sled in case of a breakdown and have to return to camp on a packed trail
We used big leather loops on the skis large enough for our toes of our winter boots to stick through. We used a section of inner tube about one inch wide that we stretched from behind our heel to under our toes in front of the leather. It worked good to hold your foot and it was easy to kick off if you broke through the ice.
I did it out in Idaho during the 80's when I lived there. Pulled a lil plastic sled to put furs on, skinned in the field. Predator hunted the same way. Come to a ranchers fence on the BLM land, no problem, step over, carry on!

Did it two season about 35 years ago between Christmas and the start of the next semester. Went to snowshoes for three years and discontinued after 5 years. To me it was just not productive enough and everything, I mean everything walks the tracks and tails you make. That was back when we had more reds but got a lot of grinners, and other incidentals. Had to watch closely and not set where domestics were likely to go.

That is what I use with snowshoes. Works great. Way better than trying to unbuckle bindings. Easy to get off in emergency.
