Hip caught a small beaver today and I think a otter swim through my 1216 I keep saying I'm going to get better springs or get rid of them . To me there a bit slow. But that's the ones I have are 5 or 6 years old.

I have the same problem with mine, seems to take a second to spring open, I find more unset than I do with something in them.

I had one for a while. After several snaps without a single catch I traded it.

I've heard that quite often.

I set my 1216s with an upside down T. I think i like them more than my 1022s. Caught a mink, rat, otter, and beaver in them this year

I love mine. I got 3 last year for those extra wide channels and runs, I don’t regret it one bit. I haven’t caught a ton of beaver in them, but every single one has been right behind the ears. They seem pretty fast to me, the springs are very strong on mine.

This one came out of a 1216 the other day I have 2 for those spots that need them.

No matter where you go there you are.

Try 1/4" cold rolled round stock. It is what I make triggers out of for the traps I make.

I bought a few dozen of the 1216 traps when the trap was first made available. I was fur trapping heavily at that time. Traps were too strong and caused a lot of fur damage. Sold the 1216 traps and bought 660s.

I used one three nights and it was sprung and empty three mornings in a row. I set it and sprung it with a stick and the trap was real slow about starting to close. Once it got about a third of the way closed, it shut fast. I am sure the beaver swam right through it as slow as it was. I pulled it and set a Belisle and had a beaver the next morning.

I have a couple. Never had the issues some seem to have with them. They work for very well for me.

I dont see any advantage to such a wide trap,in fact it would be a dis advantage in that it would limit the amount of side by side traps I could set in a wide run.

I have around a dozen as well as a few of the original Carretti's (Spelling). I bought them when rat prices were up and I figured they paid for themselves in incidental rats the first year. They held lots of big beaver pond rats by the tail.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I love my 1216's. If they are too slow for you why don't you start the triggers once set. I believe there is a trap size for every location. I believe MN trapline sold the 1216 to Freedom Brand.

The trap was slow to close, after the trigger disengaged the dog. The trap should have been closing, but did not move. I think it was caused by the bend in the jaw by the hinge. But I did not care to play with it. Much easier to set a trap I knew would work. I have no idea if they changed the shape of the jaws on the 1216 at any point. I can say I never saw any other body grip that was slow like it was. I have looked at a few of them.

I feel a lot of otter and beaver i trap are trap shy and the extra space makes them commit. Thats the benefit for me. Its also easier to tune a trap than buy new ones…
