Yesterday I was on my laptop and it froze suddenly and a Microsoft Tech Support popped up and said I had been compromised. There was a phone # to call so I called them and told them my problem. Long story short, they said our IP address had been compromised. They got my computer going again, then offered to sell a firewall that would protect us from hackers. We ended up spending $299 for the firewall. The phone # I talked to was not the same # as Microsoft Tech support. I looked up the number and Google says it has been reported as a fraudulent operation.
Has anyone ran into this? Who can you trust? Supposedly everyone Microsoft hires for tech support is the India folks who can't speak English. What's a person to do?

My dad fell for this and they still call occasionally. Might try your CC company if they can get the money back but there's not much else you can do.

We're calling the CC company, bank, everyone we can to find out if we're safe. Can't trust anybody anymore!

Do you have any protection on your PC?

Yes, I do. The person I talked to said our IP address had been compromised which would allow them to access any computer in the house.

Don’t you wish there was a group that would hunt those folks down and dispatch them?

I’d talk to your provider then, I use Norton never had any issues but they are getting out of hand with the pricing now they went from PC coverage to 5 different separate things they want to sell you now.

First thing I do is take Norton or macafee if any new pc I get . Obviously your scammers are good enough to get malware on your PC but their explanations are laughable

It's a scam. Good rule of thumb is never call a number given to you. If you want to talk to microsoft tech look up the number yourself. Two people in the office got hit with this one.

If your computer froze (and it wasn't just a browser pop up) it has been infected. The software they used is still on there. Consider all passwords and accounts as compromised. Have someone recover your data/photos etc.

You would think whoever offered the protection would step up if not you really don’t have protection just the idea of having it then.

I think you need to go get your computer checked by a local tech , one you can trust , if you can't hit them, with a bullet don't trust them.

that may well have been a scam and worse you could now have them having total access you your computer and all your data.

Good virus protection would remove that you would think seems that would be what you pay for it to do in the first place.

My wife got nailed last week. Got a call saying her account with amazon had been comprimized, some one had tried to buy 4000 bucks worth of apple crap on her account. So she tries to call amazon, gets the number off their website.....but it's a fraudulent number that they somehow switch, be cause going there later it had changed. Gets this jerk that is supposed to be a supervisor, and he strings her on, running trough pages of crap that would come up on her phone, telling her he would get her money back. Then the scam, need your credit card numbers to enact security for them. They were on two separate banks, and one recognized it as a fraud, the other paid it, and poof, she was out 757. dollars. She thinks Western Union is envolved in it to, because the money was wired through them and picked up immediately by a mexican that possibly worked there. Reported everything, but she got a little smarter about how the world works nowdays.

Tread carefully dealing with any of these creeps.

You fell for that? It happens.

You have to be careful brother and personally I would get your computer checked out or maybe even throw it away, who knows what they put on there.

In the future you will get more notifications like this if you haven't already. It could be from your bank, IRS, power company. Ya gotta be careful

Bare minimum you should at least have a VPN. Just do not use mozilla or especially the Facebook VPN

It’s a scam and not only did they get your CC info, they probably got enough access to your computer to install viruses on your computer that they will be able to continue to pull your info from your computer in the future. Best idea is to at least to have your computer gone thru by professionals and all viruses removed. Worst case you may need new computer.

They already have full access to his computer, that's how they froze it and gave him the number to call. They will freeze it again and if he doesn't pay the "tech support" scam they will extort money to get his photos/files back.

I always get nervous when people start talking about doing factory resets, reformatting hard drives or new computers. There's almost always a fix. It's just a matter of doing some really technical stuff or having someone that knows how to do it, do so.
