What in the world is all this about? I know they are landing AC on a carrier, but what is all the hollerin and other stuff all about? Sounds like the one dude has lost his dog and is tryin to find him.

twolines...I aint tryin to disrespect those guys or gals in anyway. I would bet there is a reason for all that hoopla.....just seems a little weird when they have the greatest technology in the world. I watched it a second time and seen I had missed the two screens showing the AC coming in. I am guessing that is how they determine if they are going to let them land or go around.

Nramemb....takes a pair to even get in one of those things....much less land it on a boat. I bet is a rush though. Just to fly one.....the heck with landing on a boat.

Either way...I wouldn't want that job. Night time and bad weather has got to be rough on them folks.

Some things I know and some things one can guess. Every "trap" is graded. Speed, glide slope, which wire the pilot catches are a few examples. The guy walking around is checking for a clean deck; that the previous plane is off the wire and out of the way.(Deck workers too)
Two Landing Signal Officers, main and back up, with control and wave off duties. (Both hold "Pickles" and direct communication with pilot on the phones) (Wheels or hook not down, off the glide slope, angle of attack, too fast, too high, too low are all mistakes) The gal is back up. Pickle controls lights on the Optical Landing System or "Christmas tree", series of lights not visible in this camera view but visible to pilot.

The guy with the pickle is giving comments to a note taker and giving grades after each landing.

One more question, what is it he is saying? He holds his hand up, then starts hollering something. It truly sounds like he is calling someone.

Pretty dangerous place to be.

I had an apprentice that worked on the deck of a carrier. His first time doing it was night ops out in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

I asked him what that was like.

He told me... Put on a helmet with headphones in it. The headphones are picking up traffic from 4 police scanners. Now go into the darkest place you've ever been and try to maintain 360° awareness and not trip over anything or run into someone else who is also wearing the same helmet and headphones... All while trying to not get sucked into an intake or blown over the side by engine wash.

I can't remember how many people died during his times at sea... But it was more than you'd think. Not as war casualties either... Accidents from doing routine duty.I
