This is really the first year we have been snaring. Have the books and watch about everything I can get my hands on. I can get them to hit the snares. But I am having a hard time holding them. Here are a few pictures of what I am finding. [Linked Image]
Here is one that we got this morning. Still alive when we checked
[Linked Image]
Here is a picture of what we are using [Linked Image]
Any help would be great.

If its a kill snare it might not be killing fast enough or if a live catch cable restraint use thicker cable

We have to use a relaxing lock, they need a BAD or a deer stop. I set them for a chance of entanglement. So really not sure what else to try. Maybe a different kind of lock. Would 1x19 be better then 7x7? I know we have some really good snare guys here, so I am sure we can come up with a fix.

Well that is not a relaxing lock first off but if they let you use it good for you. You just need to get them tangled up tight, so set in good entanglement or use a kill pole and get rid of the deer stop and use a BAD if that's an option. You won't lose many after that.

Also you could use a better snare manufacturer (my apologies if you did it, lol). That snare is not loaded and is bend wrong on the end, I can see that from that little picture. It appears to be a snare shop brand snare, which are some of the worst available.

Matt,
I use that same lock with 3/32, 7x7 cable, bad, and loaded, 5 foot long and then add a 4 to 6 foot extension. I don't use kill springs, but most will tell you to use them for coyotes if your state allows it. I always set for good entanglement with high tie off and they are usually dead, but every once in awhile one will just sit down and chew; they will be alive if they don't get through the cable before you get there.

Maybe just use footholds. I think it’s worse to use relaxing locks on snares than any other trapping method. Can’t believe that’s the option your state gave you.

Good advice. The high tie off helps.

How high above the loop are you anchoring your snares? I find that if you anchor your snares higher than the loop so your catch cannot lay down and chew on the cable helps a lot. You can catch a coyote by the throat doesn't mean they will die right away, they have heavy fur now which I think cushions the cable a bit. Buy yourself a spool of quality cable and remake your snares to the length that fits your style of snaring.

Thanks to everyone that has posted, I think that I am starting to figure out parts of the problem. For the most part they are anchored at the same height, I am setting them. I will rehang tomorrow high as I can. See if that helps. Once again thank all that has helper.

That snare set up is 100 years old. (Raymond Thomson) Back then it was the state of the art.
Snares have come a long way since then.

I use 5/64" 1x19 the best Korean cable that I can buy. (all korean cable is NOT good cable)

My snare that I use for Beaver,Bobcat,Coyote,Fox Red and Gray, Raccoon,
5/64" 1x19 cut 42",Newt's master Lock, deer stop,No wammy,6/0 commercail fishing swivel,3/32" 7x7 cut 66" loop end.I put my name tag built in the the end loop.
My personal snares are Stainless Steel ,Copper ferrules. The Newt's lock is also Stainless steel.

land lubbers may not need stainless steel. But I use this snare where ever I might go.It will never rust.

I am learning about snares myself

First thing that came to mind was where was lock positioned on set?
Between 10 and 2? or more on the side?
I read somewhere that you want the lock on the back of the neck to make it more difficult for them to chew

Like I said I am just learning so that may not be fact but more opinion

I think you can put the lock any where above 9 and 3. But after a coyote gets in the snare it can slide to its point of tight depending how the coyote fights the cable.

one thing i can add is. when are you checking. I can't use footholds here in my state and have to use cable restraints with fairly tight laws. deer stops and all. I sometimes have to double check here so I can check in the evenings some days with work. but I find leaving the animals alive in the cable restraint that long they stat to chew and no matter what when they are alive and chew they either loose all their teeth trying or they get away or almost do. and by the looks on the teeth from that canine he was a chewing away. so not sure if your not checking first thing or not but my point is I have to check first thing every morning and it helps avoid that situation your having. that could maybe be it maybe not. just throwing a thought into the think tank.
