Do any of you guys use these. I am an avid ice fisherman and collect custom-made tip ups. I have about 50 custom-made tip ups a different manufacturers. My wife got me a set of beaver dams for Christmas because I don't have any of those. I have to say I'm not impressed at all. They are hard to roll up and trip very easily went fishing larger baits. Everybody Rants and Raves about these am I doing something wrong. So far nobody can top a jack trap .

They used to be made better. Still not sure if there is a better tip up out there. I use em....I used a Dremel and cut a slit in the ring so I can pull the line out for easier line roll up. Do it in the right spot.

I love Beaver Dams. It's the only tip-up I use. I grew up in Beaver Dam though, so I might be biased. I haven't seen any better though. The HT and Frabill ones I've tried kinda sucked.

I just don't like how hard they are to roll up when you're picking up at the end of the day. Is there any tricks to it

Ice fishing traps are like guns and fly rods.....love these Beaver dams for Rainbows and Brookies in shallow water....they have little to no resistance of line pressure when a finicky trout takes the smelt. The beaver dams have small spools ....so it’s not my go to laker tip up in 60 -80 feet of water...I Use the big spooled Jack Trap or Heritage with bigger bait. The Beaver Dams stay with in 75 feet of the shack ...so I can see them....as the “Flag “ is not that tall.....and it’s a bad trap if there is a foot of snow on the ice.....But I own 6 of the vintage 1970’s style and wouldn’t part with any of them....excellent Quality trap

Like noted above.....you can take a wizz wheel ...and cut a slit into the pot metal line guide....sand all the burrs off ....then you can slip the line through the slit...and wind away ! Just don’t forget to put the line back in the slit ...before sending it down the hole.

I swear by Heritage tip ups. Maine company, but by far the most rugged and well rounded trap I've used. Have probably caught thousands of fish on one set of traps.

I have a set of the Muskie Standard, and have landed everything from small finnicky trout to trophy sized lake trout, to cusk at night.

X2 with Nessmuck: Use the Beaver Dams in water 10-15 feet for trout, because there such light biters, and very little resistance, for the flag to trip. Use the big spooled Jakes going after big Lakers, and salmon in deep water 80 to 110 feet, here on Superior.
I think I brought my Beaver dams in the late 70s.

All we use is Beaver Dam tip-ups and a handful of Frabill's.... When the family is up at the cottage not uncommon to have over 20 tip ups in. You need to store them in a cool area during the off season because the spindle grease will run out and you have to unsolder the spool to properly repack them. I also make custom tip-ups but for a different purpose... it's a good signal to identify your drink is empty. Nessmuck- an example would be tomorrow during the NFC Championship game when the Packers are taking it to Brady. grin

How about those round Beaver Dam tip ups? I bought one and didn't care for it at all. The height of the T wasn't adjustable so the flag didn't lay day horizontally when set, so it was useless for tip up lights. Sold it.

You can use it with larger baits. Not too sure how to explain it. Turn the loop so you can drop it down over the spindle. Then turn the spindle so you can set the loop on the brass trigger. That way the spindle is between the stem for the flag and the loop on the trigger. Causing more pressure to release the trigger.

I used them until my stepfather and his brother created these.
