Is the “Weibe 12” pro flesher” fleshing knife any good, I think so but I’m not super experienced and it’s what use with my PVC fleshing beam made from 6” PVC. Just wondering if it my stuff (not likely) or just me learn how to flesh (what my bets are on) I’ve ruined a few animals.

There is a learning curve for sure. Make sure you are brushing out your critters as the cockle burrs or dried mud will cause holes.
My whole world changed after I sharpened my fleshing knife with a flat b*stard file.
I do the whole animal with a sharp knife and scrape rather than push.

Just happy to be here.

Is it possible for a knife to be too sharp?

6 inch pvc seems a pretty small diameter but I'm not and expert. Seems only a very small section of the knife would be coming into contact with beam.

My knives are razor sharp on the slicing side. Only time I use the sharp side is on coon necks and on beaver to a certain extent. Most critters should only involve using your dull side for pushing fat and meat. I slice bevel up and my knives are sharpened approximately a 40° bevel. I also use a 8 inch homemade fleshing board. Gone trapping we all had to learn sometime and have all put holes in hides. Experience is the best teacher. Your fleshing knife and PVC will do fine for now. Just have patience and keep at it.

I like a razor sharp knife. Good advice about brushing out real good before fleshing. Doesn't take much of a burr to slice a hole. Usually not much work is done with the sharp side. With the prices, it's a good time to learn. Ruining a 3.00 coon isn't going to hurt much.

If you use a razor sharp fleshing knife and learn how to use it with experience-the fleshing becomes easier.I pulled a rookie move yesterday after thousand upon thousands of animals fleshed-I went to clean off the fleshing knife and sliced my thumb wide open-looked like an arrow shot blood trail to the sink in the washroom lol.Took an hour or so before the bleeding quit-you're never too old to learn or make mistakes LOL

When you say bevel up does that mean keep the flat part towards me or the part that runs on an angle. I’m not familiar with blade terminology

Here is how it fits on 6 inch PVC (this is just some pvc, not my actual beam but it fits the same)

Flat side on the beam. Your knife should parallel to the beam when your pushing. Not at a 90° angle

By bevel up, I mean that the bevel should be facing the animals head whether you push or pull.
I scrape on an upright beam (google blue english fleshing beam) so the bevel faces up to the animals head (away from the operator).
If I was pushing, the bevel would be facing the operator and the animals head

THANKYOU I’ve been doing it at a 90 degree to the beam as I never knew this info. I’ll have to try it again holding my knife more flat. Thanks for the great information.
