I'm looking for a bigger smoker. Are the masterbuilt smokers good. They seem to be priced quite a bit cheaper than a lot of other brands. That kind of makes me wonder about the quality.

Had one for 10 yearz or so, it worked great.

Cons for mine not digital just a dial heat setting
Had to open door to add chips
Not super insulated
Wouldn't cold smoke

Lived with all that and it taught me alot about smokeing meat.

Heating element finally shorted out and I'm planning on making a cold smoker cabinet out of it this spring

Bought a Masterbuilt Adventurer series, ( https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/masterbuilt-adventure-series-mes-130s-digital-electric-smoker) Digital temp/time. Probe temp. side load for chips. Since I bought it I use it more than the grill. Really good for sausage/meat sticks.

Caught mine on sale for $189

Masterbuilt Smokers are real good. Have had for 10 years. No issues yet. Mine is also digital controlled. :-)

Maybe my buzzard luck, but I bought one that cost about 260-280 bucks. Used it twice and it shot craps. Home depot wouldn't replace it and told me to call the comp. They wanted like 145 bucks for a new board, plus shipping.

Needless to say I won't buy another.

I bought a cheap electric one. I used it once a week at least. Had a issue with the digital part and called the company, since I had bought it within that year they sent me a bunch of free parts. I would get another one.

Ive had 2. they both had electrical issues. I kept the masterbuilt box and replaced all of the electrical components. Mainly an Auber PID to replace the stock controller.

I currently have a propane Masterbuilt smoker. I have had it for about 2 years and no complaints. If you read up on them people do all kinds of modifications. If you can afford one that is digital and regulated the heat for you. That would be a major plus.

Getting things to smoke and containing it never a problem keeping the temp right is the secret.

mine is great. No, it doesn't cold smoke out of the box; but set a box on the vent, and you have a cold-smoker. Actually, I seem to remember that they (or someone) offer a cold smoking kit, comprising duct, and box. There may have been some kind of air mover (fan) to get smoke from vent to compartment on ground next to primary.

Bought a Masterbuilt propane smoker at Lowes recently. I had no prior meat smoking experience. Have smoked 2 large Boston butts, a large pork ham, and 2 pans of mac and cheese so far. All were fantastic.

Not difficult to regulate heat...just turn down propane, but the temp gauge on door is only a general guide. I bought a set of dual meat probes that makes smoking/done times easy to track.

Only negative I've seen so far is you have to shield the smoker from the wind or it will blow out a low flame. You do have to open a door to add wood and liquid but its a seperate door from the meat compartment. Have to add wood chunks and liquid about every hour.

Also, wood chips are useless. Use wood chunks. Works perfectly.

I had one just like Trex and it worked great for close to 10 years. After leaving it out in the wind/snow/rain for a couple years it crapped the bed. After that one died I bought a new to me used one just like it last spring. They may not be the cadillac of smokers, but they get the job done nicely for most things and are a great value. And lastly, keep it out of the direct elements or at least cover it!

Trex, I have some pork that needs to be made into bacon and I will not be making a cold smoker out of my masterbuilt just like you did!!!!!! Made my day!

Happy trapping! ScottW

I generally agree on chips vs chunks... eggs, or anything that would benefit from a short heavy burst of smoke are exceptions.
